Premier League 2023/24 (Part 1)

thank God that is over finally

Messi named his pet frog after Martinez.*

Make of that what you will.

Brentford genuinely play some of the worst football in the league given the players they have, rotten stuff. Thought this for a while but this season I donā€™t think theyā€™ve played 1 game Iā€™ve been excited with.

I look at the tv and see DCL shaving his bitsā€¦no no noā€¦feel ill.

Emery unhappy with ā€˜behaviourā€™ of players during win

FT: Brentford 1-2 Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to Match of the Day: "At the end some moments, some behaviour, of us as well, Iā€™m going to manage our behaviour and take control of it. I will analyse it with our players because it was not normal.

"We were a bit excited and we needed control of ourselves. When you are reacting like that, other players and the other opponent is maybe not being in good behaviour like the match needed.

"Iā€™m going to manage everything we did that was not good and our mistakes in our behaviour.

"Maybe itā€™s not the best for football and for us but always we have very good behaviour with the referees, always respect their decisions, VAR and I will keep doing the same.

ā€œThe players are reacting to circumstances from the opponent or from supporters and we are human but we have to build the team and in difficult moments we can control our mind and be under control.ā€

If Arsenal donā€™t win the title this season, they never will.

Spoiler: They wonā€™t.

I was skeptical over the Rice signing. Not because I didnt rate him but because it didnt feel to me like enough of a value add for that price for a side with other areas that needed to be strengthened if they wanted to win the league. But heā€™s been marvellous. Probably their best player. But they still look short.

If they look short, what are we? Dwarves?

Weā€™re 1 point behind them. They still have the same limitations that saw them come up short last year and we addressed ours meaning if there is a team I expect to go on a better form through the spring it is us

Maybe we need just two back to back league game wins with dominating displays to get things going.

But at the moment it feels like we might be able to beat Arsenal just to drop points against Burnley a few days later.

At this moment, it looks like itā€™s going to be the other way around. I donā€™t know whatā€™s the style of football weā€™re playing, Iā€™ve never been convinced in the sustainability of this system, whatever this system might be, our midfieldersā€™ form has largely fallen off a cliff and Iā€™d swap Diaz and Nunez for players who can actually beat their man and score some goals.

Weā€™ve papered over the cracks for long enough, the cracks appeared against one of the worst possible teams. Arsenal will be licking their lips at the prospect of playing us at this very moment.

Yes, because we are a work in progress. Our defence is relatively settled, but the midfield and attack are still learning how to play together. Thatā€™s why any talk of winning the league is fanciful. We were top because other teams have faltered, more than due to our brilliance. Top four and a good run in Europe are realistic goals for the season. Anything else would be a welcome bonus.

I doubt that massively. Especially at Anfield. All the talk about how Liverpool havenā€™t been playing well but Arsenal have struggled big time away from home this season.

We have to beat midtable dross if we are winning this one.
For me itā€™s frustrating, just because while I understand that we are rebuilding the squad and weā€™re doing this while being a very strong team, it feels like the timing is not right, with City not clicking and dropping points. But some things we canā€™t control, as after last year it was painfully obvious that a rebuild was needed.

Did anyone think that this year at Christmas weā€™ll be sitting around the top places after selling half of our squad and bringing new faces and a new midfield? I know I havenā€™t, yet here we are.

meh, given our problems last season and their improvements we still looked capable of beating them. This season we are better than last year, even if we arenā€™t playing great. Also, as @Sweeting keeps pointing out teams like Arsenal are not really playing any better yet fans and media feel the need to portray different narratives.

This is it for me.

The media narratives oscillate wildly in a matter of days. We are in this up to our eyeballs, and I can easily see us pumping Arsenal on Satdee.

Letā€™s just hope that Liverpool shows up.

Not sure what these cracks were bar our creative side was shocking and our finishing poor.

Defense was pretty good to be fair, cracks have been there for a good 5-6 games if thatā€™s the case.
