Just as a matter of interest Rambler what percentage of blame do you lay at our door about what happened at Heysel?
All of it? 50/50? Any blame on the authorities? Genuine question btw, I’m not looking for an argument on this.
They are in a position we should have been in 12 months ago but we fucked it up. They wont. They’ll piss the league this season. Grim.

UEFA were undoubtedly wrong to choose that stadium. It was a crumbling wreck of a place but it was the 1980s and a lot of stadiums were in a bad state. They made a complete mess of the ticketing arrangements too. The policing of the crowd was totally inadequate. So huge amount of blame lies there.
However each and every individual Liverpool fan had a choice that night. They could choose to join in the charge towards the italian fans and the lobbing of lumps of concrete or they could have chosen to go in the opposite direction and move away from them. That hundreds chose the attack option directly resulted in the deaths of 39 people. That will be a stain on the reputation of our club and fans forever and that is so sad.
I have a love/hate relationship with this great sport now. I love the spectacle of the game but I hate that the EPL in particular is now marketed as a product for international consumption but most of all I detest the tribalism and hatred that the Premier League in particular seems to encourage and thrive on. That two teams of young lads playing a sport can create that toxic atmosphere is extremely depressing. The tribalism was always there of course. I saw enough of it in the 60s and 70s at away games in particular but the toxicity towards rival players, rival fans and clubs seems to have reached new heights in recent years.
My life is nearly over so I guess it is natural to look back on past times as better but I am so glad I witnessed those times when lads who lived in the community were our heroes and created so many wonderful memories and particularly those amazing Anfield nights under the lights.

You are right about the choice to flee or fight so to speak, but I’ve always thought there’s an aspect to Heysel that a lot of people overlook.
12 months earlier Liverpool fans were subjected to the worst physical abuse imagineable in Rome. I’ve read peoples’ experiences of that night and it sounded genuinely terrifying. Numerous stabbings, slashings and beatings. The bizarre spectacle of Lazio ultra’s offering our fans knives and weapons to attack their fellow citizens.
Many of those who ran the gauntlet that night would have been at Heysel being spat at and dodging missiles. I doubt running away was an option for them.
I’m not absolving anyone of blame. It was a fucking dark, dark night in our history that will never be forgotten.
That said, we were made the scapegoats 100% because it was Juve fans who died. Some might say that’s justifiable. I disagree though, I think they were just as culpable in the deaths of their own fans as ours were. Anyone who witnessed the events of that night cannot fail to see this imo.
I agree with you about today’s game. I have lost a huge amount of passion for the game to the point where I’m not really bothered what happens anymore. I posted some stuff yesterday in the hope it would trigger some interest but it hasn’t. Right now I haven’t a clue who’s even playing this afternoon.
The biggest difference as I see it is fans aren’t even arsed celebrating their own teams’ victory anymore, it’s all about getting one over on the opposition and rubbing it in, going on-line asap to mock people they’ll never even meet.
Throw in Sky’s influence - I believe Carragher and Neville were having some great ‘banter’ last night - and it all turns into a circus.
Maybe it is an age thing, you’ve got a few years on me but I’m pretty much where you’re at I think.

Interesting selections from Carrick today. It’s understandable that Martinez would get some extra time but they have Yoro on the bench with Heaven starting. No Kobe or Dalot either. 15 mins in they’ve played some ok stuff but look very bothered by what Hull are showing.

Great start to the first saturday of the season. Utd look vulnerable down their right and aren’t dealing with the crosses. They’re not all that impressive going forward either.

Hull well deserve their lead. very well organised with and without the ball.
Utd’s most dangerous player is Luke Shaw, which says it all. Expect to see Rashford and others in second half. Expect it’ll finish 2-2. Of course I’d much prefer 3-2.
