so just out of curiosity, Jesus was dead for a long time as per the bible “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40)****
how do you explain this sequence of events? Did his body hang from the crucifix for three days and nights, out in the open? Was his body removed from the crucifix and buried? I cannot imagine that his mortal body would have been in very good shape as we know necrosis happens almost immediately after blood ceases to flow. This was a public crucifixion of the son of God, it would have been fairly public knowledge.
So, was his resurrection purely spiritual then? Or was it a “Walking Dead Jesus” kind of thing? If the resurrection was spiritual, how did anyone see him?
Why isn’t the only event in history of someone being dead for a full three days not more widely documented, especially the son of god? we can trace back the timelines and lives of Egyptian Pharoahs which predate Jesus by thousands of years.
I’d also ask what consciousness actually is? What are emotions- love, hope, trust etc?
I’ve no idea if there’s a god/creator/other, but when I look into nature, or other humans, I’m open to the idea that we are more than a series of chance events and neurochemical reactions
I would like to ask klopptamist & mascot then, do they accept that they dont have the answers definitely would they then guess there are people on the world stage that do?
From memory His body was taken down from the Cross and placed in a catacomb of sorts. A rock was placed in front of it to ensure nobody could get in. On the morning of the third day following His crucifixion He “appeared” to Mary (?) and one of the other disciples (?). He spoke to them and then ascended to heaven.
When guards went to inspect, His body had gone from the cave.
This is Sunday school recollection though so may not be accurate.
even the bible cannot get these details consistent. it’s actually quite amazing that this story has so many different varations of the same “event”. actually somewhat mind boggling.
i suppose, theoretically, that most religions believe that life on earth is not the ultimate state of being.
maybe a higher being has no interest in the goings on in what we name as the ‘real world’ becuase it isnt.
think about the basis of religion, its all about getting to a place, and mostly those places are eternal.
so i guess for most religious people, life itself is the trial…the suffering and the happiness are all influenced by fellow beings…its not ‘gods’ directive.
alternatively, maybe GOD has no power on earth, maybe its not a motivational reason, but maybe the reason we are left to our own devices isnt because a god cant be bothered with us, maybe that god has no influence on this world…
on a very loosely based example…
think of God as your missus at home, and your time on earth as a night out with the boys…
now you can do this that and the other., ha, she cant even see what your up to, let alone stop it…but you have someone to answer to when you finally decide its time to go home…and she’ll know…you know she’ll know…
Ahh, from religion to philosophy. What really makes us humans so distinct from the rest of the mammals which walk the earth. the quest for understanding.
Jesus Shmeesus. Real? Fake? Some average shmo named Chrestos? Who gives a shit…
I needs to know why my tribe has been banging on about him for the last few years…
Jesus matters, as do the countless other ostensibly divine beings followed by billions across the world.
Jesus, historical figure or not, has had a tangible impact on my life today. The framework within which that happened is, in my opinion, far more worthy of interrogation.
Death, burial, resurrection… was from Friday to Sunday (counting the days inclusively, as they did, that’s the three days).
Jesus died in the cross. Roman guard stuck a spear in him to make sure he was dead.
The body was placed in a tomb. Think more like a mausoleum, and it was hewn out of solid rock. It was actually a rich man’s tomb, I think that was one of the prophesies… if anyone makes a point of that it’s easy to check. Anyway, tomb donated by a well off man name Joseph of Arimathea.
Women prepared the body, then Sabbath. Went back on Sunday to tend to body more, and the body was gone.
The account says that a very large stone was rolled across the entrance to the tomb, and it would have required many men to move it.
The account also says that the Roman Governor, Pilate, ordered the tomb to be guarded, as they didn’t want any foul play.
Jesus appeared to many people in his resurrected state. He ate with the disciples, taught them, and at one stage appeared to over 500 people. There was a 40 day gap between his resurrection and Ascension (that is, going back up to heaven).
So we can all agree then that religion is dead and the age of enlightenment is here ? I mean it’s not as though religion warned us of shit like wolves in sheep’s clothing? I think it’s good we have established world leaders who tell us the truth and guide us with their enlightened knowledge, I mean George Bush, Tony Blair, Rumsfeld , Clinton, the leaders of the free world whom have a lasting legacy of peace, for if it wasn’t for their fortuitous vigilance and determination to protect us from zealots where would we all be now ?
A counter argument is that it isn’t mind boggling at all.
If every last detail was exactly the same, it is actually more suspicious.
Consider a court of law and calling in four witnesses, then cross examining them on what happened. There would, of course, be different details that emerge.
Of consider any biography of any historic figure you like. Now compare to other biographies of same person written by other authors. Of course there are different details in the accounts.
