In formal terms, not a great deal, but the Russians would be well aware that it would be a watershed moment for the EU. While they would like to see a gap created between the US and the EU, an EU committed to full rearmament in order to lessen dependence on US-led NATO versus its own autonomous capacity is not the outcome they want - particularly of most of the EU remain in NATO anyway.
More proof that those who hold high office in Johnson’s government haven’t got a fucking clue how the real world works.

I’m no defender of this government but it’s probably equally fair to say that we have no idea how the political and diplomatic worlds work. I’m not talking MPs here, more the top civil service. Example, as ever:

Poland have gone from being a dead weight for the EU to something even worse than that. Same for Hungary.
Opening up so soon to the Eastern Europe nations was the single biggest mistake the EU have committed yet in their short history imo. Instead of staying humble, stabilizing themselves and addressing their already numerous existing issues among western Europe member states, they suddenly absorbed a huge chunk of countries not having any kind of democratic maturity then, and it has rather gone worse now. They obviously see the EU as their cash cow, while completely disregarding the values on which the EU was built.
The current problems with them are the result of that rash and unreflected decision. To be honest, to hear the current provocative and inflammatory tones coming out of Poland unnerve me quite a bit. They should rather shut the fuck up and be grateful that they are out of reach of Russia for the time being. But if the EU eventually implodes, among other causes because of their fuckwittery, and the US further lose weight on an international level, that could change rapidly though. These people really don’t know yet where their best long-term interests are.
on this , not as if i agree with hitchens on his other views… but people can be very wrong in some of their opinions and quite right in others.
The message is “stick to football” when it’s about racial politics or feeding schoolchildren.

As for trying to get football’s house in order, Truss has more pressing matters a lot closer to home.

Note: When it breaks loose, there is going to be one hell of a fog. I will report on it, but some battlefield info likely then to be incorrect, casualty numbers likely provisional and very incomplete with many unknowns. Initially, casualties will be high, many soldiers will only be reported dead weeks later, many more, missing days after. If we see a full spectrum assault, it will be difficult to identify bodies and front-lines are bound to move fast in certain areas. Both parties, both Russia and Ukraine, also bound to withhold info that cripples morale.
Also, internet in Donbas and other areas of Ukraine will go down due to EWAR, mobile phones won’t be working. In short, it will be a hell of a fog; Russia has the best EWAR capabilities on earth. It is one of their fortês.
So which info can you trust intermediately after release ? Overt changes in control of areas, that can’t be hidden for more than a day at most. Large scale shelling and bombing likely to be reported if civilians are there. Breakthroughs. Very basic casualty assessments. In all likelihood, both sides will tend to claim a higher factor of destroyed enemies than what is the actual reality, but some things can’t be hidden.
Having followed the Syrian war, as well as Ukraine in 2015, I have some skills in filtering out the info from the propaganda. Because there is valid information inside the propaganda, you just need to be able to filter it critically.
Make no mistake, if Russia opts to destroy the Ukrainian army as one of its war goals, the alpha strike will be overwhelming and horrific.
Edit: Also, Russia is then likely to shoot down some American/NATO spy drones; ignore it, it will be a distraction since no one goes to war for drone casualties. It is normal to shoot down drones during war and it will not mean escalation with NATO in reality.
