Would take a huge thing for orban…
Thats where a NAM thing does come into play. Someone like an Orban (as reprehensible as i find him personally) can broker the middle ground

Surely it has to be seen as an unsurprising political statement in support of Ukraine, which is far more than anyone has done.
I mean what the fuck does sitting at an extremely long white table do? (didn’t even get to wave a piece of white paper in victory but got to make a statement that was soon meaningless).
It has no connection to NATO, but I think it would dramatically change the politics of the situation. The logic behind Poland’s suggestion is sound, EU membership is not the full embrace of the US-led alliance, but extends some protective effect.
It’s not going to happen anyway, it’s just a political statement!
No disagreement there. My comment was simply that Poland doesn’t have the internal credibility to call for any one to join the EU at this point, when their conduct along with Hungary’s has produced the first serious discussions of how an EU membership can be suspended or terminated.
This has always been Putin. There is footage from years ago of him publicly embarrassing one of Russia’s most important men. He was berating a group of oligarchs over issues in the economy and forced them all to sign a pledge. When the last man signed Putin, sitting at the other end of one of the enormous tables he seems like, made him get up and walk the pen back over to him. In words it might seem trivial, but it was a clear message to all the men around the table and to the public and was a total humiliation.
Wars dont actually help “the economy”. WWII helped the US economy because of some very specific circumstances. That is very much the outlier. Don’t confuse the bottom line of politically connected defense contractors with “the economy”.
Also w.r.t the EU after the brexit , think we can all agree that its a dead sinking ship.
I think you do know how state machinery forces their companies to produce things when it comes to war.
You are looking at those companies and the affiliated and other companies as well…
Also you are talking about countries with huge manpower etc like… well US , China , Russia and then to a much smalller extent India…
And if you talk about sanctions having an effect , they will have an effect on lesser countries with not that amount of manpower… But for countries which do have that manpower , they matter fuck all…
For example , US and co imposed sanctions when India did their nuclear test… If anything those samctions improved the macro economy in india rather than hindered them.
Unless he can forge a clear dynastic continuance beyond his time that bears his stamp, that type of behavior is likely to see him removed or assassinated at some point. Men like these are powerful in their own right and do not forget; they will take the first chance they get to stick the knife in.
I can’t think of anyone who would agree with that.
In full acknowledgment that this is exactly what Id expect foreign propoganda to say, but there reports leaking out of Macron’s team yesterday of their perception of how ill he seemed at their recent meeting. Slower, stiffer, less energy and generally older.
It would poetic if someene internal doused his underpants with poison and its slowly taking him out.

You really can’t compare the two. The sanctions on India were essentially on direct state aid, really an expression of displeasure more than anything. Even the milquetoast sanctions the UK has brought forward so far are far, far more significant.
That said, the Russians have been preparing their economy for a post-sanctions world since 2014. The effects won’t be quick.

I am not sure what you mean by any of this. But my point is that war is seen to be good for the bottom line of a very tight knit group of politically connected companies and their shareholders. It is generally bad for the overall economy of that country. Shit, the UK still had rationing for a full 10 years after the end of WWII.
Shit, the UK still had rationing for a full 10 years after the end of WWII.
Which is why obviously they had to give independance to their colonies afterwards ?
This is just comical. A UK minister, following rather underwhelming sanctions that she has a direct say in, thinks that privately held clubs should go further.
Any English clubs who reach the Champions League final should boycott it if it is held in St Petersburg, says Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
Which goes to show @Limiescouse’s point, no?
I think ive said what i wanted in this. And ive been as neutral as i can be… This shit could quite easily have been avoidable.
I do condemn what russia has done. But to say that the west has been blameless in this is something i wont agree at all.
yeah, we got the gist of it. let it fucking go already.

I was actually thinking along these lines yesterday without vocalizing. what would membership in the EU offer Ukraine in terms of security and backing?
