It’s also important to remember that Putin is the responsible for all these crimes. If he hadn’t started this war these atrocosities would not have happened!
Let’s not forget!
Can I ask, for EU countries like Austria or Finland who is not part of Nato, if Russia invades them, would they get help? Or is EU a pure non military alliance? And as long you are not part of Nato, you will not get backup?
There’s no Article 5 equivalent in the EU statutes so no obligation towards mutual defence. Finland is part of the Joint Expeditionary Force so they have a certain level of agreed mutual protection. I don’t think Austria has anything though but could be wrong.
I’m sure they’d get help though but in Austria’s case it would probably be similar to that given to Ukraine. However, Austria is surrounded by NATO countries to the extent that Russia can’t get to it without crossing NATO territory.
Russian tech seems to be a veneer over some glaring deficiencies. As an attacking force they have been shown up as ill equipped, not particularly well trained as a whole with a pretty unimaginative officer corps. Quantity and nukes are literally their only claims as a credible attacking force although I’m not surprised as they have generally had a defensive doctrine. A force attacking Russia is likely to encounter a significantly different animal to the one we’re seeing bumbling around in Ukraine but in terms of invading Finland, it would be an epic disaster for the Russianse, as it would be attacking any well equipped and professional Western army. The average Russian serviceman is just not motivated enough or equipped enough.
The ones that do have to worry are the smaller nations like Moldova.
That’s right, this was what sowed the seeds of an EU Army. Although Article 42 of the TEU provides for mutual assistance (in the manner set out in accordance with the articles that follow) it is not an Article 5 equivalent obligation nor do member states adopt the automatic position that an attack on one is an attack on all.
Yep, Moldova is the natural logical next step were Russia to take Ukraine (or large parts of it, particularly the coastal regions).
I was quite alarmed at the focus on Poland in all of those ‘polls’ that were posted above. Sure, the interpretation of those polls overreached in places but the answers given nevertheless seemed to indicate that a significant proportion of Russians (at least those asked) felt that Poland was fair game.
Not sure that these ‘polls’ are accurate to be fair, nor can be taken at face value. What do we know about what the average Russian thinks anyway? And who made that survey in the first place? I’d be very prudent, as propaganda is on both sides, as always during a war.
