Russian War Crimes (Part 1)

If your talking about the Russian people in general then they’re already being spoon-fed information by all sections of the Russian media, such as entering Ukraine was necessary to quell Ukranian aggression towards Russia.
A BBC report earlier said a large percentage of the population will just go along with Putin’s propaganda while those who actually follow events through international media are disgusted with what’s happening.
Ultimately we should be doing everything possible to undermine Putin and if it upsets the average Russian then that’s too bad.

She’d be the only one, the rest of us would already have been incinerated.

Given the sheer might of Russia, surely Ukraine have no option but to surrender or expect massive loss of life?

This sounds like one positive move that could bare fruit. In a similar way that Russia (is accused of) interfering in certain elections etc. getting into the populations mind from different avenues may be one way to actually weaken him a little. He does seem pretty impervious to most things though.

I’d caveat this in stating this would be yet another step backwards to the Cold War days

Generally no.

But Russia is a kleptocracy run by a small group of oligarchs who have gotten rich asset stripping their country. They prop Putin up. This group generally agrees with Putin on reestablishing Russia’s sphere of influence and the invasion of Ukraine. Their yachts are moored in Monaco, they own properties around the world, and they enroll their kids at Cambridge and Harvard.

Don’t punish the Russian people with sanctions. Punish the oligarchs who enjoy the trapping of Western civilization while they declare war on the foundations of the Post-war Western liberal order that has kept the peace longer than any time in European history.

I think NATO/The West could cut off Russia’s supply lines at the Ukrainian border. Make it impossible for Russia to supply their front line.

They’ve probably already surrendered. It’s 12 hrs and from the sources i’m reading, the Russian army is already within touching distance of Kiev. Other cities have fallen as well too

That’s a very …emotionally charged opinion. Do you live in the most white British part of the country?

For the rest of us, we probably know not just people with Russian heritage, but who are full blooded Russians - friends, friends of our kids, just trying to get on with life like the rest of us. They probably are over here for a reason - possibly because they don’t agree with how their home country is run - and we shouldn’t be turning them away from a similar life we are trying to live just because of the colour of their passport.

No, I live in one of the most culturally diverse and welcoming parts of the country…Liverpool to be exact.

There are always casualties of war, collateral damage I think it’s called, but it’s the price to be paid if it means sending back hundreds of Russian millionaires/billionaires with their assets stripped and the pressure it would put on Putin.
I’m not advocating anybody ending up in a body bag, unlike the fate of many Ukranians as all this pans out.

China’s military is unequivocally strong enough to invade Taiwan. The deterrent factor is confrontation with the US. You can bet this is being watched with genuine horror in Taipei, because they are aware that the US commitment to Taiwan lands somewhere between Ukraine and NATO.

There’s QUAD now to counter the Chinese.

I do think the US will hang it’s partners out to dry if push comes to shove and China does invade though.

The D in QUAD is dialogue. That is nowhere near the same level of commitment that NATO involves, and Taiwan is not in it in any case. Would India go to war with China to defend Taiwanese independence? I doubt it. Australia would be very supportive of any US action, but is the lightweight in that group.

Harder to invade Taiwan. Naval invasion more dangerous. If you think we know a lot about the Russian military… imagine if they were in boats on the ocean.

Also there’s Korea , Japan there ready to provide military bases etc as a deterrent to China.

Just think that Russia is past the stage of any NATO bases nearby providing deterrence.

Taiwan’s also much more mountainous. Taiwan could effectively fight a guerilla war against the Red Army

Harder, but not out of reach. The Straits are only about 150km, so 15-20 minutes for combat aircraft. It would not be without cost, but I suspect the Chinese regime cares no more for their own casualties than Putin is troubled by the young Russians who have died today.
