First time I have heard of a soldier taking passport (id) into battle, would be rather stupid imo.

Are you sure it’s a passport ? I don’t think it is, I think it is a military service card. And you are supposed to carry those.

Not sure if it’s a regional thing (country/continent), and it’s been a while since I was in military, but dog tags is all we used.

In Russia they use military service cards and they look like those on the picture. We use a service card in Norway too but ours looks like basically a visa card.

Great piece that , thanks for the link. I’ve been struggling to understand the support for the war for a while now and had anguished over many of the same points the author was making. The comparison made to what happened in Germany is salient , and just as that stain took generations to wipe off , so it will be for Russia and Russians.
