Okay, so I’ve done a little bit of reading up on the Moskva. Fairly old ship laid in the 70’s and commissioned in the 80’s, underwent a refit and was recommissioned in 2000. Displaces circa 13 000 tons and in my short read ups seems to be a multirole warship with anti shipping, anti air and ASW platforms. In theory, with up to 104 long range and short range SAMS it should control or severely contest the airspace around it up to 400km (?) away which is the range of the S 300 while posing a severe threat to shipping up to 800km away. The Moskva also has 6 close in weapons systems for point defense; if these systems are engaging its balls to the wall but one would expect them to be an effective safety net against subsonic cruise missiles.

A quick read up of the Neptune Missile system shows them to be based on the Russian KH-35, improved no doubt, subsonic, an effective range of 280 km with a 150kg warhead and rated to be effective against targets displacing up to 5000 tons with coastal batteries designed to be operated 25km inland.

I’ve absolutely no doubt that it is an effective weapon but… wtf. Firstly, I would assume that the Moskva was in position primarily in a denial of airspace role so with an effective range of 400km for that role why on earth would they risk a capital ship inside the envelope of a coastal anti-ship battery when they outrange it. Fair enough, operational requirements may insist that they have to operate within the envelope to provide effective air cover for land based operations but then how does your own fire control of a vessel in that configuration with over 100 Sam missiles with 10 launchers get distracted by one, repeat one, drone and then get done by just two subsonic, fairly standard par, for the course cruise missiles? Fuck me. Seems like amateur hour isn’t confined to just the Russian Army.

From the BBC live page

Mykola Bielieskov is a research fellow at Ukraine’s National Institute for Strategic Studies in Kyiv - which advises the Ukrainian government on military matters. He says the incident is ā€œa very powerful psychological tool to support moraleā€.

However, he notes that Moskva ā€œis an old shipā€ - and it has been newer Russian vessels that have been hitting Ukraine with ā€œKalibr cruise missilesā€.

"But still, it’s a flagship for Russia’s Black Sea fleet and definitely it’s major damage - not only in material capability but also to morale.

ā€œAnd on the other hand it’s a very powerful boost for the Ukrainian morale.ā€

Mr Balowski?

It’s an old ship. Destroying it is surely good for the effect on morale, but it doesn’t change much to the forces in presence as it seems. More modern ships are currently targeting Ukraine with their missiles. This one had more of a symbolic status, being the flagship. But its loss won’t change much for the Ukrainian civilians I’m afraid.

What irks me beyond the senselessness of this all, is that this ship will now rest on the ground of the Black Sea, adding to its pollution. Nature is already under a lot of stress because of ordinary human activity, and this war only adds to it. It’s so incredibly dumb.

But so is the indiscriminate destruction of cities across Ukraine. Just think of the environmental impact of having to rebuild these places.

got to admit I’m finding it increasingly difficult not to get triggered by what I’m seeing happening. Oddly that puppy being pulled out the rubble yesterday / day before nearly broke me.

Absolutely. My post was more about how stupid the Russians are than anything but make no mistake, it’s a major blow to morale. Command and Control across all branches of the Russian armed forces are fucked and incompetent. If it weren’t for that arsenal of nuclear weapons they’d be of little to no concern to anyone.

You can bet that every military analyst from Washington to Beijing is poring over all of this gleefully. Wouldn’t surprise to me learn that first strike options for a future conflict are now becoming more of viable consideration than ever previously considered. If the performance of their conventional military is so hamfisted I wonder how much better their strategic forces can be expected to perform.

I genuinely can’t tell the difference between that and some of the drivel that gets spouted on Fox. Apparently both are one and the same now…
