It is hard to be abstract when people who are losing relatives/limbs/everythingā€¦

But there is a calculation that is made that makes politicians and thereby voters sleep more easily.

the quest for world conquest has been happening for Millennia. it just keeps evolving.

Nowadays, governments write legislation that directs tax dollars from the public kitty into the pockets of corporations and ā€œinvestment fundsā€, or by creating conflict overseas and ā€œsending aidā€ AKA dumping huge amounts of tax dollars into the war machines that are owned by the lobbyists that get their preferred candidates into office

Like it or not, that is how it works

right, Dwight Eisenhower?

A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destructionā€¦

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influenceā€”economic, political, even spiritualā€”is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryā€“industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.

the best part of all this. The right-wing controls the war machine. itā€™s in jest that they take pokes at the Biden Adminstration for sending aid to Ukraine, because those Billions of dollars donā€™t go to Ukraine. They go to

Not true. For us Europeans this conflict is a lot closer to home than what is going on in the middle east , and a lot more consequential. For some of us too it has become personal.

As said already, radio silence was being observed whilst the war had slipped into a stalemate. That looks like it might be about to change.

it hasnā€™t, though. Israel happened whilst the winter operations happened.

Bakhmut 2.0 has been happening in Avdiivka, on the Luhansk line the Russians have been ever-so-slowly regaining ground. Ukraine is actually losing this war right now, as much as it pains me to say.

For me people are interested in different aspects. Warfare, politics and the humanitarian side.

The two conflicts have different aspects, and have changed over time over the conflict.

Ukraine the focus is on warfare, (gains/losses/technology), the politics is largely frustration about not doing more and isolating Russia, and we have transitioned from humanitarian side being core focus.

Palestine, I think there is very little interest in the tactics of war but instead the debate is ethical warfare, the politics is based on religion and disagreement with their own governments, the humanitarian side is high due to terrorist acts and collective punishment of civilians.

Personally I am interested in all three, and read this thread every day. However my interest is based upon humanitarian > politics > warfare.

I have a long standing interest in Russia/Putin and the politics. However I also have deep rooted belief in equality and freedom and ethical disagreement for action of Israel.

I donā€™t see it as competition of the two. More that they are at different stages. We need to remember one of the reasons the Hamas attack occurred was a few months ago they were feeling their plight was being forgotten.

I believe that History repeats itself if humans donā€™t intercede

Once again, a megalomaniac has decided to increase his wealth.

Once again, humans feel content to watch it play out as long as itā€™s ā€œother peopleā€™s problemā€

Pharoahs did it
Romans did it
Greeks did it
Gaulā€™s did it
England did it during the Crusades
Spain/France did it during the Conquistadores
Americas did it to Africa
Dutch did it in Africa

Exactly! Unless they feel real pain they will continue to sit passively like the backward peasants they remain. If the US withdraws support such that there is no longer any need to consider the politics, I expect Ukraine will see the value in covertly targeting Russian supporters in London, New York etc in addition to Muscovites etc.

Like Trump?

From the missile strike on Belkek air base in Crimea/Krim.
Confirmed damage at this point are some GBAD radars, at least 3 damaged air crafts, and a annihilation of itā€™s command post.

So we have another general killed. Claimed by Ukraine yesterday, but confirmed by Russian publications today.
