Have to say Brighton is the surprise spender this summer. They had been pretty prudent and had negative net spend under the two previously higher profile managers and now they splashed a net 200m with a 31 year old manager. He needs to succeed in a bigger way for a club like Brighton to splash that money.
I think it’s about time for them though. Their first few years they were, I think, appropriate cautious to not treat the increased revenue from being in the Prem as as a guarantee so tried to not push the boat out too much. But they havent just managed to stay up, they have solidifed their position in the prem as a good side and so think they should be confident in now planning for a premier league level budget. And when you couple that with the money they made in the last two windows from their sales (Bissouma, Cucurella, Trossard, Caicedo, Raya, Alexis) they have a good pot of money they can put towards players a level or two up from the targets they were previously focusing on. We’ll see if they get any better return on it
Not just that, but they qualified for the Europa League last season which would have been a massive boost to the finances for a club like Brighton and no doubt they will be keen to get back into Europe again after that first taste
