lol after palace gazzumped Sunderland over Fofana, it looks like Sunderland flipped the switch and left Palace with an empty plane in Lyon with Fofana going to Sunderland in the end instead

Hilarious end to this transfer window. Somehow, Everton, Chelsea, and AS Monaco all got screwed over because Balogun decided he didn’t want to go to Everton.
Monaco is in financial trouble because they couldn’t offload Balogun or Camara, though the Saudi and Turkish windows remain open.
Everton only has one striker because they let Beto go.
Chelsea doesn’t have a replacement for Fernández.
I think we could get Camara on the cheap in January if we wanted.

It’s all explained in this Guardian piece. Sunderland and Palace both had planes waiting on the runway at Lyon and they jointly arranged for the player to have his medical in France. In the end, Sunderland’s owner flew to Lyon and talked the player into joining Sunderland. It’s like a football version of a John Le Carre novel.

I’ve been an admirer of Palace for a long time. For what they achieved under Steve Coppell and their efforts to bring through local talent through their youth system into the first team.
However, I’m really glad they missed out on Fofana.I know little about the player but I don’t really like ‘gazumping’. It is also satisfying given how they have behaved in relation to us, particularly in the case of Sarr.
I do wonder if we were pushing for Wharton most of the season and then stepped back after Andoni came in - and whether that has upset them (although given links with other clubs I would be surprised if that were the case).
