It was the part of last summer’s drama that was really poorly covered. The main Newcastle guy at the Athletic had been reporting for a couple of years that the club internally acknowledged their initial spending was bigger than they could support within the regulations and it was something they were going to have to pay for by flipping some of these players for profit and reinvesting with cheaper options. It was even part of the pitch to the players that they would get the opportunity to move to a bigger club if they played well and generated interest. Probably from the summer of 23 on he started reporting that he didnt understand what they were doing because they not only failed to make those flips but kept spending. It was like they were too emotionally invested in seeing where they could get to with the initial growth phase and so refused to do the tough things the model required of them.
Their back room is now completely turned over and it seems the new people are just acting more rationally.
Will be interesting to see Newcastle’s progress this season as they are signing or linked with many of the young players people on social media have said we should look to sign, and the club has reportedly been interested in.
