Sweeting's Ones To Watch - 2023/2024

Hey everyone!

I changed up the format to this for the new season and made something a little more formal and hopefully simple to refer to. This led me to making a website for my annual ones to watch list.

The website has several different sections…

FULL SQUAD LISTS

  • A full breakdown of every squad (1st team, U21 and U18) for each club in Premier League 2.
  • Anyone who qualifies for a team, or plays for a team, this season is listed in the appropriate section - eg. Harvey Elliott is listed in both the U21 squad and first team squad as he qualifies for the U21s by age and has played at first team level.

TRANSFER TRACKER

  • A full list of transfers of players automatically eligible for U21 football (this means they were born after January 1st 2002).
  • All moves involve Premier League 2 clubs (eg. a player moving from Sunderland to Bradford City is listed but one moving from Coventry to Bradford City is not).
  • Also includes a small review of each move from me.
  • At time of publishing this stands at 395 transfers.

ONES TO WATCH SELECTIONS LIST

  • Full list of all players I have picked to date as “Ones to Watch”
  • Please note this is for reference purposes and does not include my review of the player.

ONES TO WATCH REVIEWS

  • 3 players per club, per year.
  • Full player preview based on my best knowledge and viewing ability of the players. All picks were made by me and based upon my interest in the player, thoughts on their future potential and current first team prospects.
  • I’m not at all predicting that every single player will or can be a Premier League superstar but I am saying that they have a chance of becoming first team players at their current clubs.
  • Ongoing career updates on an annual basis - at the end of each season I give a review of EVERY player’s campaign and my thoughts on their progress.
  • I managed to dig up my notes from an old email address so I have player reviews dating back to the 2019/2020 season.

If you like the website I’d love it if you would bookmark the address (OnesToWatch) and review it from time to time, I’ve still got a few little things to finish up and a bunch of new stuff I’d love to add to it, time allowing.

To get you started for this season these are my selections for the 2023/2024 Ones to Watch…

Would really like feedback - let me know if there are any features you’d like to see, I’m always open to constructive criticism. Equally someone like @cynicaloldgit please don;t hold back in letting me know what a sad bastard I am for doing all of this! It took a lot of time and effort but it’s simply a passion project for me - hopefully some of you find it interesting/useful!

Cheers!

Looking good mate, appreciate the work, :+1:

Disappointed and quite frankly shocked that each player doesn’t have 10 games worth (900mins minimum please) of linked videos. No bragging rights saying here’s Johnny Wunderkind if you can’t also say you’ve seen him play ten games. Please put in more effort, ta.

Great work and very very sad!

I don’t know about 900 minutes but adding some video is one of my future ideas!

TL;DR

Seriously, though, it’s absolutely brilliant how you dedicate so much time to doing these reports. They really are a treasure trove of information.

Thanks.

@Sweeting hiw close would you say Quansah is from contributing to the first team

Not as close as I would have liked. As I said in my write-up he has been held back by poorly timed injuries or I think he’d have a handful of first team games by now.

Talent-wise he has everything you want - I suspect he may go on loan again but maybe if he sticks around he’ll be able to compete with Matip/Gomez (especially if they both continue to play like shit).

Is everyone else scanning for Trey Nyoni?

He’s still in the Leicester U18 squad - I’ll update when I get home tonight and the transfer tracker will give some brief thoughts on him (regular U18 appearances aged 15, always a good sign!)

Should be at least one extra for Liverpool, unless you like the other clubs just as much. :imp:

If you are rating CBs. Among all mentioned.

Who according to you is the best ?

Anyway great job as usual.

I get the feeling that Conor Bradley will go the way of Neco Williams. Good but just don’t seem to be good enough for us (not forgeting that any RB have the enviable task of dislodging TAA especially on the attacking attributes). I see him moving on in a season or two?

From this year then Bashir Humphreys is probably the most developed player right now but I think Quansah has the most potential to be a great player.

I think hes a lot more talented than Neco, Williams only really had one year of being a standout at youth level and then he hit Liverpool’s first team. Bradley has been one of, if not the best player on the pitch at every youth level and then did really well on loan at Bolton.

Talent isn’t always a predictor of where a player ends up though and you are right that having to get games when Trent plays the same role is very tough.

I am so impressed by this! Thank you for the dedication and for being a source of great information. I’m a fan, a dedicated fan… but there are levels, and you sir, add something the vast majority can’t dream of doing.

Feedback? I wouldn’t have a clue. Four Liverpool players seems a good shout, as we are all most interested in LFC.

Like everyone else, I’m wondering how good Quansah is going to be, in terms of making the grade, and hopefully he might see some action in the Europa, early doors.

Ya of course he might not exactly be like Neco level but for any young RB to dislodge TAA is either they are damn bloody fantastic, or TAA becomes damn bloody bad or shift permanently to another position or gets sold. It’s a daunting task and any good enough RB might want to sit around and wait. That’s why I said 21,22 where he will start to look at his long term future. That is why handling people in a club like Liverpool is so important, and Klopp is so good with these.

How about Quansah, have not seen much myself, impression is he is tall and lanky, is he more Rhys William with not much of a pace or is Matip with some reasonable pace (not that I have measured Matip Vs Rhys, just a perception?

No, Quansah is much quicker than both of them. I’m not sure on his pure pace, he plays with more of a van Dijk “style” so he’s never really sprinting but I’d say that Quansah is an athletic player - especially when compared to Matip and Williams.
