The Amazing Planet and Nature Thread

I can’t remember ever having experienced a total eclipse. I’ve always wanted too, though. Must be special. I often wonder what human beings a thousand years ago thought. Eclipses have a strong showing in various mythologies and ancient religion for a reason. It must have been as if gods spoke to you or showed a direct visible and very physical sign in ages past.

a decade or so ago, we climbed the Coba pyramid built by the Mayans (was still allowed at the time). our escort for the day has been to Chichen Itza numerous times and explained that the pyramid was built in the 9th century but they already believed in a 365day calendar and the pyramid is already oriented NEWS. there are some optical illusions around equinox and they had a lot of superstitions around eclipses.

Where I was, as it really got cold, the crows went crazy - and until that moment I had no idea how many crows were in the immediate area. Combined with the very strange light (dusk levels of illumination, but no shadows and the spectrum is defined by Air Mass close to 1 instead of the 3.8 when the sun is at the 75 degree horizon), it felt sort of apocalyptic.

I thought some of the cars would be blown away too.

Cars have a much higher mass for area ratio. That building was at best a metal frame and skin construction, slab on grade. May as well have been paper.
