So what’s the word on gifs? Are they banned outright, not supposed to be used off topic, selectively chosen? Which one is it.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not an argument just would like something definitive. If it’s banned, no stress. If it’s frowned upon because it’s just, well there, understandable. Are we worried about threads loading slowly? Points are made in humour with them though sooo… what are the conditions governing their use?

For example, posted a video where Trump was being deranged and namechecked another guy and a gif that I thought appropriate to that vid was posted. And edited out. If it’s threads loading slowly then I doubt it’s gifs to be honest. I never have a problem opening threads that have had them recently posted. It’s the Twitter* links that hammer that, though. Opening the Ukraine and Iran threads are an exercise in patience that has nothing to do with gifs.

*It’s a necessary inconvenience, though, and minor in the scheme of things.

We try to keep to keep a balance between no gifs at all, and too many gifs, which quite frankly is a pain for the eyes. Also, seeing the same old gif for the 100th time, without any further commentary, can be boring to be fair. To all posters using gif in excess: why not try still pics? They are equally efficient, and don’t hurt the eyes as much.

Or this here can be very effective as well imo:

Of course, it doesn’t mean that all gifs must be banned. If a gif underpins a good point made in the discussion, or is genuinely new and never seen on here, then it can add something. That’s why on one hand, there is no strict no-gifs policy, but on the other hand, an occasional ‘road-sweeping’ action occurs. It’s never personal against any individual poster, just some cleaning up.

In the end, it’s all about the balance. Do we really need to put in a gif into every other post? Does this make our posts better? If not, then let’s find other, more creative ways in order to entertain us all a bit.

I’ll be honest, I’d rather see 100 gifs than one of those emojis, I can’t stand the fuckers for the most part.

I can understand @Hope.in.your.heart point of view. When I try to read some Discord discussions, they are flooded with meaningless gifs, and that gets annoying very quickly (one of which used a bald guy twerking whenever the poster brought up Slot in the discussion).

Fully agree with this point. Have stopped visiting those threads due to the Twitter/X spamming

It’s up to the individual poster. If the mods/admins want to ban them then the gif option needs to be removed from the site. Until that happens, it is not something anyone will ever be able to stop

As I said above, we don’t want to ban them, far from it. We want an intelligent and measured use of them, and that’s the responsibility for every poster on this forum.

In fairness i was hoping @ZinedineBiscan was going to post his trademark gif…that would have meant Hope would have known it was the end of the discussion…
