We’re not the only ones doing that type of research into characters, background, etc. We do things well on many levels in last years. Things can slip under radar and people can be unpredictable. I’m far from his biggest fan, but I think we would sign Lovren again (or that we wouldn’t judge something about his character that would block the deal), there’s a sea of Dejan Lovrens out there.
You can interview and check references all day. And you will still have the odd bollox gets through. Or their bolloxology develops over time. Then you weed them out or let the group take care of the issue.
Also…
Where is it stated about the no dickheads policy at Liverpool? Are we making shit up to suit the picture?
If Osimhen (queried dickhead) was available on a free, would our people say no…
I doubt it.
I don’t think this is controversial.
Take a random bunch of twenty lads and some will be dickheads
Take a group of twenty lads where you are actively trying to screen out dickheads, and there will be fewer.
We seem to have done our homework right after the balotelli transfer
There were still guys like Sakho and to a lesser extent Lovren who managed to slip in. But there’s been due diligence done in that front.
And again , I don’t think Lovren was a problem area in the team (in terms of discipline or behaving like a dickhead).
He drove me right up the wall screaming at some of his defensive blunders but that’s w.r.t him as a footballer.
Unless there’s something about Lovren that I’ve forgotten.
I do think like you said other teams do the same. But we evidently put more stock in reports coming in from the concerned people. And we do it better than other clubs.
He was an anti-vax covid conspiracy nutcase, and I think he’s developed some other bonker opinions beyond that.
Just to show what Arsenal has done.
Everton flirted with relegation after Gylfi was sidelined. Didnt back him at all. Respect.
City were also slow to respond to accusations about Mendy but eventually acted once subsequent accusations were made. There are 3 separate accusations against Party with the third coming at a time when it was already an open secret and something Arsenal wee already well aware of.
The legal case between Mendy and city complicated things a bit but the precedent set by Mendy’s win came long after arsenal charted their course of sticking their fingers in their ears so I don’t think they can use that as cover
Someone should put this to the LegoMan.
Do hope the rest of the teams and their fans put it in chants when they face arsenal.
And change the thread name while we are at it.
Agreed. Even though Quansah has gone and we have a need, Dejan is too old now.
Just want to agree with the general point. We screen for character quite deeply these days. It doesn’t mean someone can’t make a mistake, or do something unexpected, but as far as we can minimize that possibility, we do a better job than most. We have a good group.
I see some of the questionable politics too, but for the most part, the ones that applies to are from different cultures and backgrounds, and much as it grates, their worldview is not the same as a large part of the fan base. At least politically.
As for Partey and Arsenal’s behavior, I have mixed feelings. It has been an open secret for a couple of years. But he hasn’t been named, legally, while things run their course. The timing is very suspicious that a matter of days after leaving Arsenal, it is now in the public arena.
On the one hand, innocent until proven guilty. That has to be there as a foundational principle. But I’m troubled by the possible sense that Arsenal got what they could out of him, before the shit hits the fan, and if that’s how it pans out, it is a failure on their part.
Arsenal wanted to extend the contract. Partey didn’t agree to the terms. The shit hit the fans then.
Nope.
Let the justice system work.
And don’t make the alleged victims suffer any more through football chants.
Ultimately this should be dealt with in a court of law. I am glad the “presumed innocent” was used as people often get that wrong.
If he is guilty then hopefully justice is done and he rots. Sadly sexual assault cases have such a poor conviction rate.
Yeah even getting them to court can be really tough
this is the third time he’s been mentioned in regards to his behavior, ive never heard anything?
what is the context here?
understandable. You just can’t stop stupid behaviour from footballers all the time. Not every footballer comes into liverpool with the upbringing that some of their colleagues in other countries would have. Not excusing Lovren’s behaviour , but then Mane’s engagement and marriage with someone so clearly younger than him never set right with me either. So does Pepe Reina’s links with right wingers. You can add Alisson supporting Bolsonaro too in that list
All of the above doesn’t set right with me but you’ve got to look at their upbringing as well. Different people, different countries and different values.
But as far as his behaviour goes while Lovren was with us, there was nothing untoward happening in that front.
We are talking about a serial rape accused here who was defended by Arsenal and allowed to finish his contract. I do have no sympathy for anti vaxxers and their bullshit but the two instances aren’t nearly related.
