The Arsenal Thread

Pretty sure Phil McNulty has deleted a piece from last week about Arsenal :joy: There seems an odd gap on football last weekend and I am sure I read a silly wankfest on Arsenal.

Like I’ve looked at it several times and he’s actually got much of it right but the swerve and pace is just too good, it’s a decent keeper but I don’t think he’s spectacular and he often makes the simple look hard.

It’s got fuck all to do with the ball. We are not sat here banging on about the ball being an issue across the league.

Dowman is very talented but turning to a 15 year old at Anfield to save the game instead of an experienced and effective PL winger, who has played that role of last minute savior quite regularly, is certainly a choice.

It’s just an opinion but I’m quite sure Arteta was sat there going, ‘well Slot’s teenager came on last week and was a hero so I’m going to get mine on. It’s Anfield, it’s schadenfreude, it’s written in the stars’ imagining the fans singing, allez allez allez, fuck off Pepe, Max’s a gunner now.

Derivative manager, derivative club.

Not to mention Trossard’s history of actually scoring at Anfield… But hey, it’s his game. For all I care, they don’t have to win any trophies for the next thirty years. When they also weren’t winning them, at least they were doing it in a manner so beautiful and unlucky that you’d have been forgiven for feeling sorry for them (especially as the actual trophies would be going to the likes of Man United and Chelsea instead - as would their best players).

Trossard not playing was actually perplexing. He’s probably being lined up for a transfer out.

Always seemed to pick his game up against us.

When you go through their squad there is a lot of talent and depth but compared to us and the amount of international captains and leaders and ‘best in class’ players we have you can see why they are perennial bridesmaids and 2nd best in every department.

GK: Raya is 2nd in national team behind unai Simon and 2nd best in PL behind Alisson.

CB: Saliba - the 2nd best CB in the prem behind Virgil

DM: Zubimendi - the 2nd DM in Spanish national team behind Rodri.

CM: Rice the 2nd best English midfielder behind Bellingham.

RW: Saka the 2nd best right winger in the league behind Salah.

CF: Gyokeres the 2nd best Swedish striker.

The list goes on but Arteta has basically assembled a billion pound squad that is 2nd best in class in almost all departments.

Best at cynical shit housing at wrestling at corners?
LegoMan can have that belt

Best in being Best Man…for 3 continuous seasons.

They were utter shite yesterday, pretty sad to see a club that’s spend almost a billion rely on set pieces to be threatening. Their new signings all look piss poor.

Terrible camera angle this for poor Robbie… Anyone think the back of his head is beginning to resemble something else..! :0)

After getting beat on Sunday… Well, new ideas are needed :0)

Arsenal fans comofrting themselves that they competed well considering their injuries and only lost because of a moment of magic…from a guy who was forced to play out of position at RB because of injuries to both other Liverpool RBs.

I do have some sympathy because Saka and Saliba are important to them, but…BUT…Madueke was their best player and wouldnt have played had Saka been fit. They’ve spent all summer crowing about their depth and how they wont be beset by the issues of last season. And this is what happens when you have a manager who responds to the Saliba situation of him allegedly pulling up with an issue in warm ups by playing him anyway and losing him after 5 mins.

He plays them into the ground.

I think about us on a title challenge and rocking up to United in the spring of 09 knowing we needed a win to keep it alive and already dealing with the loss of Alonso then seeing Arbeloa pull up in warm ups. We didnt even have another RB on the bench so we inserted a soon to be retiring Hyppia into action with absolutely minimal time to prepare, and pushed Carra into a role he hadn’t played in years. And we fucking smashed them.

While we play Burnley, Everton and Palace in September Arsenal have Forest, Man City and Newcastle.

Going to be fun.

I’m glad we beat them. They had the better of the first half, we were much better second half, and it was a magical free kick, such a good hit.

Another day they might easily have won the points. Well, maybe. I’m not sure on the mentality. In the second half we kicked it up a clear notch and wanted to win the game. They looked like they were playing for a draw.

I couldn’t be happier with the way we go about our business. After the window I expect to see us improve further as we go.

A lot of the discussion is missing that they just didnt create anything. Their best opportunity was a snap shot from 20 yards that Ali saved comfortably. I think their next best opening was one late on where Eze chose to dive to try to win a pen rather than shoot from a not easy situation. We didnt do much creatively until the last 25 mins, but once we got into the position where we were able to move the ball we posed them real problems.

Had we not have won I think the argument I would have told myself was not that it was tight game that could have gone either way, but maybe more that if you leave it until the 30 mins to create anything against a side as good as that you may come up without a goal. But it never felt like a game we were losing.

There is something interesting Arne and Salah are doing this year where they are being incredibly positive about Arsenal to a degree you dont often see. Maybe it is that they are both unusually well spoke and gracious. But it feels like a tactic to hype pressure on them that “even the champions think Arsenal should be favourites this year” hoping…expecting…they wont respond well to it.

I’ve noticed how gracious Slot has been toward them. It would be hilarious if some psychology is wrapped up in that. Arteta is so tightly wound that maybe Slot is killing him with kindness?
