In modern day football, what footballers do off the field are as important as on the field, if not more. Think about it, they spend around 180 minutes per week with domestic and European games on field. But rest of their life off the field on training, at home, doing their own stuff. That’s when an example like Hendo is important to young players. Hendo was never and will never a great player in terms of abilities. But if any young player in our ranks want to question themselves whether they are good enough to make it at a big club because they don’t have enough flair, they are not skillful enough, then they just have to look to Hendo. How many times do we see Hendo getting drunk, partying the night away after winning big games or titles? I cannot remember any, he might have but I do not remember any. And such examples off the field are really alot more important to our young players as a Captain then just being the best player on the field.
Nobody is questioning Hendo’s character or leadership.
In the past, great captains have been replaced whilst still at the club…Smith, Thompson, Hyypia…its progression.
If we think Hendo is less likely to be a starter next season, is there a case to hand over the on field responsibility?
The question was never about Hendo.
Some have suggested he will fill the Milner role, off the bench etc and mentor to young players.
If so, should the more regular starters be considered for captain?
Wouldn’t surprise me if Hendo has one last resurrection in him - even if it’s only for a half-season.
I saw a feature about Hendo when he joined, talking about training and how he was always the first one there and the last one to leave. Always wanting to work longer in the weak areas of his game, always looking to improve. And yes it mentioned he was teetotal, same as Milner.
When your team is full of leaders like Ali, Robertson, Virgil, Mo etc then you don’t need to be running round the pitch shouting orders at everyone. Klopp will know if he needs to make a change, but I can see Hendo remaining captain until he retires/leaves.
Midfield is the “best” place for the captain as he’s central to the game and everybody can hear him. Also needs to speak English fluently.
VVD it is then. Never make your keeper the captain, they’re mad enough as it is.
You’re expecting my logic to be logical?
I think VVD being Captain takes something away from his normal game
The issue for me is leadership. At its core, leadership is influence. It is not a title, a position, or a prominent place on the org chart.
If LFC is to achieve what we want to achieve, we need a good group of leaders. We seem in a healthy place in that regard, with the amount of international captains, and other leaders in the squad.
Of course the club captain should be one of the leaders, but the mantle of leadership doesn’t sit on his shoulders alone! So at that point we can relax about Hendo, and see how it unfolds.
Maybe he plays more than we think next season? Or maybe he plays less? Or maybe he plays in a diminishing role as the season progresses, which is what most would imagine?
Let the season run its course, see what’s what, and then do what we need to.
Didn’t agree with this thread at all really until I seen the slight change he’s made to his hair style. Now I’m all for it.
If we were to replace I’d go with Robbo but don’t the players decide.
Klopp picks captain and vice captain and squad votes for third and fourth choice. That’s how Virgil and Gini got in the mix a few years ago.
Thought the squad chose it.
I think Hendo is a good Captain and should remain in the role. It is clear that he has a lot of respect from the squad and players across the game in general.
Hendo, loves proving people wrong, I genuinely hope he proves people wrong again this season.
Milner going leaves a huge hole to fill in the squads leadership, he was someone who added so much experience, advice and level headedness. That said, I am confident other players will step up
Fairly certain the squad chooses. I think Jürgen can’t be bothered with it at all, remember reading about how he would just pick the longest-serving player.
Not many teams have a Jurgen pitch side doing his YMCA dance routines for 90mins, while screaming at the players when they slack off… So to Captain LFC might be for the bigger role, off the pitch, than on it
Can easily see it just jumping up to be being VVD and Robbo.
The latter I would like to see get it mind.
I think Robbo is a bit too much of a rascal and probably less able to keep his head when things get heated.
VVD is the obvious choice, maybe Trent or Mo as vice captain.
Alisson for me… Sometimes people grow into the role they take on
Dunno VVD doesn’t seem to involve himself. I can see Alisson not being a bad shout considering what I remember from last season.
