We had three captains in Hendo, Milly, Virg and the players voted for another three,” he said “So that was won by Trent, Robbo and Alisson Becker. It was just that from time to time last year with the amount of injuries we had, we had no-one available from the players’ committee out on the pitch. So that is why I decided to increase the group to six.”
Regardless of whether he leaves or not, the obvious answer to this thread now is a resounding yes.
If he had made a statement turning down the Arab offer, then he would retain the captaincy.
Its actually too late to make the statement.
Yeah, agree with the above
I don’t agree. I don’t think Henderson showed the integrity I expected from him.
UK and all the democratic world is sucking up to the Saudi (and other Arab) regime. PL is continuously collaborating with all the evil entities and ruining the game. What are we doing about it?
Are we kicking Henderson only because we can? Are we kicking Henderson only because he is the least of the evil? Why don’t we question our own moral standing.
Who is kicking anyone?
He had the opportunity to make a statement and he didn’t.
That questions his focus, his intent, aligned to his waning value to the team.
Time and intent
I don’t think henderson should be the captain if he stays. He still can be in the core leadership group etc but a captain for Liverpool while he’s playing for Liverpool shouldn’t be getting involved in these stuff.
This is the time I wished we hadn’t let Milly go. Probably would have given hendo a piece of his mind (this is including the time he played for City).
From what seems to be the situation now is that the club want whatever they want and they won’t pay.
Might be worth setting an ultimatum on it, evidently whatever Fabinho funds are it’s allowed us to upgrade our search, so funds must be available anyhow.
If the Henderson deal falls through, I would still keep him as captain.
If we are going to strip him of the captaincy for listening to a lucrative offer and agreeing terms - subject to the club doing likewise, which it wouldn’t have done if Hendo is staying - then he nearly left, but didn’t!
It’s football, and that’s how it goes.
He should stay as captain, though for some fans they would look at him sideways.
If he is stripped of the captaincy for nearly going to Saudi, then at that point he should be moved on from the club, because we are making him persona non grata, and that doesn’t sit right with me.
Even if he has been morally compromised in the eyes of some - speaking up for lgbt rights, but then agreeing to go to Saudi - I don’t like the eye for an eye stuff that would seek to go after Henderson and punish him.
If he stays I’d love Klopp to speak and draw a line under it, so we can move on and focus on the job in hand.
Eh…the club can make a statement, we will sell to anyone except doing business with Saudi clubs. We didn’t, did we?
No
And the player is who we are discussing here??
The morals of the club are another days work
I don’t think we should be too harsh on Jordan just yet because we don’t really know all the facts… Worse come to the worse and he did sign for them… we also can’t presume he won’t make a stand, in an interview, or wherever, for what is right or wrong in his opinion - football is football in his eyes, and good on him if he decides to wear a rainbow tee-shirt walking about…!
Stevie Gerrard nearly went to Chelsea after our CL win in 2005 - he then continued to be the captain, and that’s what I also expect if Hendo stays in the end.
But Gerrard was a nailed on starter, Hendo isn’t, even if Fabinho goes.
This discussion started way before the alleged Saudi contact.
And yes, Stevie stayed as captain in 2005.
The initial question was concerning Hendo’s on pitch time and whether or not he merited holding the captaincy with limited involvement.
The Saudi offer has clouded the issue somewhat, with loyalty etc now being discussed.
Hyypia played after losing the armband. So did Phil Thompson, Tommy Smith and many more…its evolution of a team.
We don’t have to get too emotional or into the moral/ethical side of it.
Henderson is barely good enough as it is and he has decided he wants to move. If the move falls through, I’m sure he’ll give it 100% here next season. But that shouldn’t be as captain.
It’s a chance to have a clean break and let somebody else step up. Henderson shouldn’t retain the captaincy just because the Saudis couldn’t stump up enough cash to sign him.
I think Hendo will stay club captain for a further year. I could obviously be wrong about that, but to me, the latest Saudi stories seem like nonsense clickbaits (he was probably offered something by them, but most likely refused it).
If he stays (that’s my bet), I don’t really see the reason to take that armband from him.
In Hyypia’s case, I can remember Houillier saying that his game was affected because of the added burden, and that giving it to Gerrard would free him up. That was indeed the right decision with hindsight. Here, we have a captain since a long time, who is fading away a bit due to age, but who surely enjoys a lot of influence and respect from his team-mates, also off-the-pitch. And I’m quite sure that he’ll feature more than enough next season anyway.
I also don’t see a player who would be his natural successor right now. Maybe Trent will one day be the captain, maybe VVD, but for the time being, I can’t see a better one than Hendo.
Think I’d go with Alisson personally. Virgil was hardly pulling up any trees last season either and it could easily end up being a conversation that needs to be had in another couple of years. Too early for Trent and Robbo might not be a guaranteed starter anymore with the evolution of the shape of the team.
If he does stay I think it will be Henderson himself who will step back from the role, not convinced that Jurgen will take it away from him.
