The Captaincy: Who's your pick?

Provided he stays, the Saudi offer shouldn’t have any bearing on his role as a captain. The question is if he’s still able to fulfil his duties with his diminishing influence on the pitch. Judging by last season that would be a resounding “No” but he could have a bounce back year in a revamped midfied. In any case, it’s up to Klopp to decide and there is nothing to suggest that he is ready to move someone else up.

Still, the most probable outcome is that he departs and this gets solved by its own.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but I’m pretty sure Jurgen kept Kehl as his captain at Dortmund for a long time despite him falling well down the pecking order.

I’m just not sure he’s really that arsed about who wears the armband on the pitch, it’s more of a collective responsibility anyway.

There is another way to look at this though… Jordan might relish the chance of handing the captaincy over to someone else, so he can concentrate on his own game a bit more… He has not been at his best recently as we have all seen, maybe it is the more dignified way for him to hand it over, while he still remains in the background…!

Yes, mention it to him at the next footy practise session. See what he thinks.

PS - I think we as fans might be guilty of attaching too much importance to the captaincy. There is the cermonial aspect - walk the team out, do the coin toss, but that’s not much of a job.

The job, as it strikes me, is to be a leader who will hold standards high, demand the best of others, and represent the club well, both on and off the pitch.

Henderson checks off those boxes, no problem.

If he stays and his playing role diminishes in the coming season, as might be expected, then we could look at the captaincy next summer.

In the meantime, you would need a vice captain who might me more of a sure thing for playing, and of course other leaders throughout the team and squad.

We seem to have a good leadership culture to my mind.

After Henderson wanting to go I would strip him of the captaincy if only for his leading stance on LGBTQ+ as it is pure hypocrisy on his part
As I have always wandered how much money is enough money?

Never enough.

For me I don’t care about money. I saw too much family bickering to ever place too much value on it and came to following understanding: there’s never enough and there’s never too much.

a very memorable time of my life was when I had the least amount of income, but also the least amount of responsibilities. some of the richest people I know (7-figure+) are also perpetually stressed/obsessed with work and no amount of money will stop them from working themselves too hard. really it’s about finding balance.

He’s our centre half
He’s the number four

Watch him defend
And we watch him score

He’ll pass the ball
Calm as you like

Name escapes me now though!

Yup

Robbo for me.
Top man, bit of a bastard to the opposition, seems loved by teammates, good craic, playing a blinder as captain of his country :ok_hand:

Confirmed done deal! Henderson gone for 12m plus addons to Al-Ettifaq.

I’d say we have plenty of good captain candidates - VVD, Alisson, Robbo, Salah etc.

I’d quite like for Ali to be given the armband.

The guy is a class act, for everything he’s been through during his time at the club….he’s given 5 years of his prime self consistently. Guaranteed to play virtually every game. Loved to bits by every player, staff and fan but also because I think he’d make for a great captain.

Have never liked a keeper captain

Yeah I understand that sentiment aswell, it’s pretty unlikely as I don’t think we’ve ever had a keeper captain (maybe Clem? Pepe I think was only ever vice). Personally can only see it being given to Virg as he’s taken that responsibility many times in Hendo’s/Milner’s absence but it’s just preference.

Virgil for me.

would have happily backed VVD for captain pre serious knee injury,

but he seems to have lost that air of authority since that injury,
he no longer has that something extra about him IMO,

Vice captain maybe

Alisson for me
