Think we should jsut bite the bullet and get a Zambrotta regen who can play at RB too. Although a Maldini regen who can also play at CB would be fine too.

Why not just keep Gomez? Homegrown and can play both CB and RB effectively.
This year should draw a line under Gomez. He is one of the few disappointments this year that are difficult to ascribe to whatever has gone wrong with Slot. When he’s been used invariably he’s been really poor defensively, and there were times we wanted to use him but couldn’t because he’d broken down or was too close to breaking down to risk losing.
All the situations have been present this year for someone like Gomez to fill in and be valuable and it hasnt happened.
He’s not fit!
We saw that against Shitty yet our manager played him against PSG as well. No way will he survive another season. Particularly if Slot remains.
His fitness is clearly an issue, but when fit he is very useful. I just hate to pay a significant transfer fee for something we already have. That player (like Frimpong) may not stay fit either. Plus, we have a potential homegrown issue. That can’t be taken lightly.
That would be someone like Cambiaso.

If I thought Gomez was still good enough and could get fit enough I’d love for him to remain. I unfortunately I haven’t seen either of those things this season. He just hasn’t played enough. I also doubt he will play enough if he stays.
Also I haven’t a clue about Gomez’ contract that is another factor.

So, it’s been widely reported that we are unlikely to pick up a defender this window, meaning it’s likely we go with VVD, a bunch of kids and the walking wounded.
It feels like a car crash waiting to happen. Can someone convince me it’s not as bad as that?

- a bloke who’s about 40
- a kid
- a perpetually injured bloke
- an injured kid

I think we need to judge where we’re at come September. I’m not saying it’s guaranteed we’ll sign one, in which I’ll be one of those breaking out the pitchforks, but also announcing to the world we’re desperate for a defender right now is a sure way for selling clubs to jack up their asking prices.
