The Central Midfield Thread

Is Mount still a free agent this season.

Thatā€™s a weird piece. It kind of, sort of, makes the argument that our midfield is where it is because the plan we made for it in 2017, when we brought in Ox and purchased Naby, hasnt worked as expected. As if you get one roll of the dice and then youā€™re stuck with it. It doesnt do anything at all to address why we stuck with that plan.

The Athletic had a better piece about the challenges of replacing Gini with a statistically comparable player given his unusual combination of traits. Interestingly, the player they identified who seems the most comparable (to the role he played in our midfield) and available is Caicedo.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2024.

Oh okā€¦thought heā€™d been mentioned on a ā€˜listā€™ on midfieldersā€¦who might suit us.

And the latest is were now thinking about extending ox comtract snd that might scupper the caicedo dealā€¦ beggers belief

If this happens & we donā€™t sign a midfielder now or in the summer Iā€™ll stop watching Liverpool for that whole season and will not put a penny more in the club until FSG are out.

I donā€™t believe FSG would allow that to happen mind, but if they doā€¦

You would think the reason for extending Chamberlains contract this summer is because we canā€™t get who we want rather than Caicedo not coming because we decided to keep Ox for 1 more year.

Does that mean you will stop posting on here also  :smile:

Contrary, he will have more time to post here

Donā€™t get too excited there RO.

The whole sell (huge profit margins) to buy (talents at mid range) policy works greatā€¦until you realise half the players have no resale value and the ones that do are the players we plan to build a team around.

Where is this latest news? Some bloke on Twitter?

Itā€™s come from Graeme Bailey of Teamtalk.

Thatā€™s happening then.

Letā€™s be honest the last 2-3 games have been dreadful so itā€™s the worse time to listen to anyone with rumours especially ones perceived as the wrong decisions because they will get far more traction.

Iā€™m starting to think with all the forwards we now have- especially if Bobby extends his contract- that we may sell Salah to help fund a midfield revamp. He is the most saleable asset (and one of the only really) for the club at the moment. Would you be ok with that? I think I would. Ben Doak, while still young and inexperienced, can be added to the list of forwards and will surely get minutes next season. He looks the real deal.

I think we are looking at a complete switch of formation perhaps.

Thatā€™s my idea around why we bought Gakpo.

Why would we keep buying predominantly left sided wingers if we were planning on selling Mo.

Neither Jota or Diaz have been anywhere near as good on the right as they have been on the left.I donā€™t see right forward as been a particulary good position for Nunez either and Bobby is better suited in a free role rather than just right side.
If we are to sell Salah then the first position to be filled with his transfer fee should be the one vacated by him and use whatever is left to try fix the midfield issues.

In the the last 4.5 yearsā€¦.

And FSG should take the rap because they forced Klopp and team to buy everything except midfielders? They have something against buying midfielders?
