Had a quick look through the off topic section of the forum and couldn’t see a thread on this.
Cards, figures, lightsabres, comics, cassettes, autographs, memorabilia, etc.
What do you collect? What’s in your collections? What good finds have had recently? What’s your chase item, the one you just need to have?
Personally have started picking up tcg cards again in a burst of nostalgia. Holy fuck Pokemon is expensive and scarce. You’d be forgiven for thinking it were printed on gold plates.
One Piece is something I didn’t even realise had a tcg, and not something I’m massively aware of as ive never read the manga/watched the anime. The cards are good though, both in quality of material and art. Very high value online too by the looks of it.
Yu-Gi-Oh is still very cheap and readily available which makes it far more fun to collect Think my main focus will be completing some Yu-Gi-Oh sets. The game and the anime used were both things I enjoyed massively as a kid so it’ll be fun to fill out some binders
I have tried to get out of the habit of collecting everything. When I emigrated, I found that I had boxes full of long forgotten obsessions that I had little interest in keeping. I sold a great deal on Ebay, and sent my vinyl albums off to a record fair. Most books were donated to our local library.
What I did keep was my football memorabilia and CD collection. I have also been collecting Doctor Who Blurays as they have been released.
I think my son has a similar obsession, but it is with Manga comic books, although yesterday he said he was reading a Chinese comic book (not sure if it is translated to English or German) which apparently is read the right way around.
Used to collect comics when I was a kid, sold them all to my brother when I lost interest in my late-teens…fucking idiot…
Don’t collect anything now, but one of my guilty pleasures is sitting down to watch ANY collectable show. Loved American Pickers back in the day, and was one of those fuckwits in the background of Antiques Roadshow when it was held at Senate House in London.
Whenever I watch something on the telly, Mrs SBYM asks me why I’m watching those idiots. I tell her I’m not interested in them, I just love the stuff. Would never own it, but love it all the same.
I collected comics as a kid. Like @SBYM I discarded them stupidly. I tried to collect World Cup coins in 1970, but never completed the squad.
I collected concert tickets for a while in adulthood, but that interest waned as well.
I have a weird collectable, I keep knickers from all the women I have made love to in a box under my bed. I have one pair in there so far.
I love seeing specialist collections in the museum. When I lived in Scotland I often went to the Riverside museum in Glasgow and the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh.
Both had toys and other family paraphernalia from years gone by, some of it very recognisable. The Riverside also has a huge collection of vehicles (it used to be the transport museum.)
It’s actually something that would be great in Liverpool, as there were several iconic toy manufacturers based in the city: Hornby, Meccano, Dinky and so on.
Manga and comics are something ive never been able to get into. My brain just doesnt compute it properly. I enjoy books and have a moderately alright library. I enjoy anime and used to enjoy the cartoons based on comics. The actual manga and comics though just don’t work for me. Kind of jealous of people who are able to enjoy manga/comics but also glad im being saved from another habit
Still, if properly looked after, they become a tidy investment. As well as the entertainment they offer for their contents.
As far as football memorabilia goes i have some Liverpool stuff, but not much. Only things ive naturally acquired in the course of my time, not anything ive gone looking for. Thankfully another collection habit ive been able to avoid though im sure id be jealous of some of the things you have
A friend of mine is a massive Dr Who fan; runs a Dr Who comic, has written books about dr who, etc. Hes been collecting info on all the collectibles from the original run on. He loves all that
Is he a Bolton Wanderers fan? I used to work with a chap called Gareth in Glasgow who was a Doctor Who nut. I think he only took that job because of all the Police Boxes in Glasgow city centre!
D’you know im not sure. He is big on his footy. Went to AFCON this year to see what it’s like. Usually though if I have a conversation with him about footy its about Wales as thats his national team could be the same one
Morning spent running around shops as its a new set release day for pokemon. Luckily able to get some packs but fuck me the queues and the scalpers lingering round. Obscene.
In the late 70, when I was 14-15, I collected beer mats and beer towels. This basically meant stealing from pubs.
In those days pubs didn’t stay open all day so the art was to hit them just after opening time when they were still empty. Many a time you could peep in and survey a completely empty bar/lounge with the barmaid distracted somewhere and that was like an open invitation to strip the bar of as many towels and mats as you could grab hold of.
I’ve still got them all in the loft, a couple of hundred different towels and thousands of mats. Sometimes wish I’d carried on ‘collecting’ them but would probably have run out of space years ago.
