The Corona Pandemic

Tech hat on…

Older iPhones and iPads will only run ios 9.5 (or similar)

Apps that are upto date and compliant with data protection yada yada won’t work on it. Apple is extremely keen on your data (so they claim for our benefit) and upgrades. Do the maths. I’m waiting for version 3, never, ever install brand new software on anything. Microsoft are the leading proof of this.

Disney have finally had enough and today announced they are ending their furlough scheme and releasing 30k employees. Most were part time and so not really on a furlough scheme, but that is massive especially considering their aggressive attempts to reopen

Disneyworld has been slowly reopening and I think I saw today that the governor of Florida has reduced restrictions? Disneyland is still shut. We have many friends in Anaheim who are increasingly finding life difficult without the Disney trade and conventions.

Disney’s problem was that they anticipated maxing out everyday with hugely reduced capacities. I’ve seen photos on Main Street at lunchtime with a handful of people. Like Anfield, no themepark can operate at 10% capacity. They couldn’t fill the parks even with a 20% limit.

Worrying times for Disney as they’re pissing cash and the likes of Apple and Amazon are starting to take notice.

Disney’s problem is they pushed the governor to take a “pro-business” stance on the outbreak so they could reopen, only to then find that not enough people wanted to go. Because you cant run a thriving theme park in a plague. They have now actively contributed to our shitty response and still not been able to stave off the economic fall.

While completely destroying the credibility of the State of Florida along the way - no one trusts the Florida data now.

I never understood why anybody went there in the first place, seems the worst mix of everything. Devastating weather being the primary one. There’s a reason why Disneyworld was built there. Dirt cheap realestate and proximity to Newyork and Europe being key. Stupid really as the flight difference between Orlando and LAX from the UK is only 1 1/2 hours.

They have serious trouble with the cruise lines too. Pushing to get them up and running ASAP. I’m sure that they’re doing no more than asking the governor nicely…

Wow Disney have really gone down in my estimations having read this along with other stuff they’re doing.

What they did to the Star Wars movies is unforgiveable

Then managed to make the prequals look good. That took some skill. Gravity in space, horses in space and warping through ships to destroy them. Wow…

It was the new direction that they have given to all films that wound me up more than anything. Desperate to provide a female lead that had zero weaknesses and basically wiped the floor with anything that went before it seems to be the whole thing with Disney now. It completely broke the whole franchise and turned it into a farce. That combined with the internal wranglings that completely fucked the second film and left the last with a mountain to climb.

They’re even doing it with the Marvel films and their other reboots now.

Then the fact that a Jedi can now train themselves from a positioning of not knowing anything instills me with great hope as I currently try to type this using the force.

Rebecca Jones, the woman who created the original Florida dashboard and was fired for not fudging the numbers, released data yesterday showing the “official” school infection data is a complete fraud. The twitter feed was nothing but parents documenting that the official numbers reported for their school are different (lower) than they have personally experienced.

Good for her for providing some sort of corrective, that doesn’t seem to be happening everywhere. The Florida data has been probably the most suspicious since the CDC was sidelined, there is such an obvious break in the data precisely that week.

Surprised to read that in the UK, someone breaking the quarantine rule gets fined £ 1’000 only. Here, we face a fine of 10’000 Swiss Francs for someone breaking the quarantine.

From reading various stories, plus seeing comments in social media acquaintances, it is hard to avoid the impression that most of the people in the UK have given up on the idea of halting the spread of the virus. There is no will to face any sort of real costs (“fed up with not having got away on holiday”) over any consequential period of time.

It is akin to how an exhausted deer just lays down and lets the wolves tear it apart. But I doubt the deer is thinking about being a brave individualist that loves freedom too much as its throat is torn out.

I think this is pretty much accurate description of life in the UK at the moment.

Interesting study from India suggesting that 60% of transmissions can be spread by as few as 8% of cases. Identifying what distinguishes a regular case from a spreading case will be huge, and, while a lot of it might be explained by non-human factors like length of interaction, where the interaction happened etc, I think you have to start at at the idea of viral load of the individual.

The study also reinforced that children are perfectly capable of transmitting it to other people.
