The Corona Pandemic

Yes, that is what they did 7.500 fans in the Johan Cruijff arena under strict rules. They will do it probably again this weekend.

I think the right thing to do right now with places with widespread vaccination is somewhere down the middle. Of course the purpose of vaccination is definitely to allow normalcy to return to society,…or else why do it? But yet we need to manage a very dangerous incorrect perspective that vaccination is the end in itself. Social distancing, wearing a mask, hygiene regimes, temperature measurement etc…must still be done but already people are talking prematurely now of doing without masks etc. It would be great to start seeing fans back in stadium and this discussion surely is going on. What numbers to allow in is not as important to me as what measures and enforcement they are going to implement because while its great to see thousands of fans back into the stadium, the last thing we want to see is people taking off their masks in the stadium, having a beer, shouting and spreading their spittle (like one who did onto my head the last time I was there) and start hugging one another. Because while vaccination means you are less likely to fall very sick from Covid, there is still a good chance if you catch it from someone else, you can still spread it to friends or family who are still not vaccinated.

So I think return to normalcy is a logical next step but it has to be better managed or else a free for all will end up with more tears.

Yes, I tried for this Friday but it went from Friday PM available to being unavailable in the time it took me to click continue! I’m booked in for the following Friday now at Malvern. That’s about a half hour drive for me too. Second jab booked in for the 23rd July. :syringe: :syringe:

A court case gets under way in Brussels this morning in which the EU will seek an order obliging the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to deliver some 90 million Covid-19 vaccine doses by the end of June.

The European Commission is taking the legal action after accusing the company of repeatedly failing to meet contractual delivery schedules.

AstraZeneca has said it will defend itself against the charges and that it has complied with the terms of its EU contract.

Lawyers for the European Commission will seek an injunction from the judge that would effectively order AstraZeneca to meet a target of 90 million doses by the end of June.

Both sides will present their arguments, but if the judge is convinced by the Commission’s case he could issue a swift interim order, even while the case continues.

AstraZeneca had been contracted to deliver 300 million doses in the first and second quarters. However, the company has said it would only deliver one third of that, blaming supply chain and production issues in its European facilities.

The company has also said it has complied with the best endeavours’ clause in the contract, a claim strongly contested by the Commission.

The hold up of AstraZeneca deliveries has affected the vaccine roll-out across the EU, including in Ireland, but the vaccine has also been subject to restrictions due to a very small number of rare blood-clotting events.

Member states were uneasy about legal action in that it might further complicate deliveries, or lead to more vaccine hesitancy.

However, on Friday member states gave the Commission the green light to proceed.

The outside sitting area of Pubs and restaurants are opening today (from 12 until 6 pm ) after being closed for more than 6 months.

I think I’m in for a (liquid) lunch, in fact, I can almost hear a pint of Guinness screaming: Dutch, Dutch, Dutch …

Yeah, we’ve had outdoor spaces at pubs open for a couple of weeks now. Really enjoyed a pint in the local beer garden the other day. One of the best beers I’ve ever tasted.

Jab time  3 days after being eligible. Local too, that’s service.

The day before the pubs opened, I helped a mate (landlord) install external lighting and sound system in the blazing sun. Had to keep tasting and checking the beer all day

It’s really been the biggest sanity saver of this whole situation. Florida has been really lax on restrictions from the beginning and that, for sane people, has created a bit of a headfuck over the things we were allowed to do while knowing we shouldn’t do it. No matter how well you understand the science of the public health issues, seeing with your own eyes doing things you know to be inappropriate wears at your commitment to be responsible.

But in Florida almost everywhere has a beer garden, and it’s been pretty apparent for a long time that you can enjoy these with very little risk. It’s allowed us that ability to grasp at some normalcy while still doing the right thing.

Vaccination program in France is now full throttle from what I can gather. Half a million jabs a day split at the moment as 3/5 1st injection 2/5 2nd injection. About 22% of the population have had their 1st jab, 9% their second.
It’s not making much difference so far though, the situation is dire. A total lapse since the 1st wave. This indicates to me that communication is really important and the government after indicating it was over haven’t been able to pull things back together.
I still watch the weather which imo hasn’t helped, it’s been cold and dry up until recently. It’s now warm and humide (I got caught out sweating like a pig). As for the vaccination program I wouldn’t expect significant covid diminuation until about 40% have recieved their 1st jab. This is due to the priority system (i.e most vunerable 1st) as it leans towards people who don’t have great contact with others (not that this is wrong the 1st priority is surely to protect the vunerable and hence reduce the pressure on the health system) however it needs to be noted what effects this can have.
I also find the fact of getting the 2nd dose under protocol is reassuring.

This is a fairly easy to understand visualisation

That’s impressive. Per capita that betters the UK’s best day so far of 844,285 on 20 March (which would be the equivalent of 1.04 million in Germany).
