The Corona Pandemic

How long did that last? My 2nd is one week today.

More or less only the day after. Still felt a bit tired after that, but no big deal. But this seems to be so different from one indiviual to the other.

One of my acquaintances had to be in bed with heavy fever the whole day after his second jab (Pfizer). He said it was really hard, but it lasted around 24 hours, then it was over.

Yes but particularly because over 93% of cases are now the Delta variant. The concern is that the rising case numbers will lead to an increasing number of hospitalisations and, unfortunately, deaths. That hasn’t yet been translated proportionately (there’s been a small rise in hospitalisations and deaths week on week) indicating that our vaccination drive is suppressing a lot of what would otherwise be serious illness but equally there’s always a lag in this data so a few more weeks with the current (relatively non-punitive) restrictions is sensible.

What I don’t understand is how this new/Delta variant is getting in/spreading?

The vaccine roll-out has been aggressive, there’s considerable internal restriction/lockdown and there’s tight cross-border restrictions.

I do hope things become a bit more normal.

Unfortunately by the time that Delta had even been first identified (April) it had already begun to seed in parts of the UK. By the time it became a Variant of Concern (May) and restrictions on travel from India were introduced it was starting to out compete the Alpha variant.

Lots of reasons for it taking hold here more than elsewhere. The UK has a higher proportion of travellers to and from India than other European countries, many live in multi-generational households, and that demographic has a higher proportion of vaccine hesitancy.

Of course, we also have a much better idea of what numbers of Delta and infections we have generally than elsewhere due to our much higher levels of testing and genomic sequencing than pretty much anywhere else in the world.

Fuck me. Given it took me 5 days to get over my first Pfizer jab (severe exhaustion + very mild flu symptoms) I am not looking forward to it then!

Areas such as Leicester, Bradford, Bolton and a number of other areas have hardly been out of the “hot spot” spot light. I wonder why it is not possible to just go door to door, street by street and vaccinate in the areas that testing has shown to be a hot spot?

On a slightly separate note, I do not see why there is hesitance in the the uptake of the vaccine - but then I also don’t understand why people don’t vaccinate their children against MMDR…

I dont know anyone who had symptoms on both doses. If you had them bad on the first you likely wont get much from the second (fingers crossed).

I have been fortunate that I got online to the booking site around 8am. The wait times for registering 1st and 2nd doses were both <20 minutes.

Nice. Very nice.

I remember Twickenham did a walk-in vaccine centre 2 or 3 weeks back. (From memory I think that alone hit near 20K over the weekend) and 4 have been set up at Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham and Charlton this weekend, so should see a huge increase in the number of those getting vaccinated.

I also think should this weekend prove successful - you can expect to see other clubs around the country, and possibly even around Europe looking at similar jobs over the coming weeks
