Holidays??

Aye they do :crossed_fingers:

Thank you :heartpulse:

ONS reckons about 570,000 had the virus last week. :fearful: However, there are indications that the numbers might just have started to level off and I saw data that suggested the second wave was already in remission for some countries on the continent… :crossed_fingers: Don’t ask me to find it now as it was a few days ago!

I hope you’re right. The FT curves for the UK and EU kind of indicate otherwise but they do work on a rolling average.

It feels a scarier this time round, to me anyway.

It should be, because it is.

  • We are going into a period where we always knew that if a significant level of infection existed in the population then it would sky rocket.
  • The UK is heading into that period with a case load about 3 times what it was in the spring peak
  • We have demonstrated a real resistance as a government and a population to doing the right thing and exhausted much of the enthusiasm that existed in the population for cooperation and compliance.

Thank you for not making me feel better about the situation :worried:

And even on the best case scenario with the vaccines, with the current timeline and manufacturing challenges, we wont get that into the population at effective levels until well after the worst of this winter peak will have hit.

I saw a headline yesterday that Dr Fauci had said it was possible that a vaccine would be available from Late December. I was a bit surprised at that.

He is putting late December as the earliest possible date if everything goes right until then. But that is when it would be legally available, not when you would actually be able to get your hands on it. Even with a massive upscaled manufacturing effort its going to take about a year to produce enough doses to fully vaccinate the entire US.

I wasn’t speaking about this, being a superstitious person that I am. But I think it’s okay to do so now.

So, 24 days ago I had gone to the market to buy groceries. I was passing by my uncle’s home who spotted me from his window and insisted I come up to his flat.

As soon as I step inside his house, I am greeted by my kid cousins and both the lads are coughing intermittently, which made me nervous. They looked fit otherwise but laughingly admitted they were feeling a prickly feeling inside their throats - which they thought was cool. They even tried to scare me that it’s Corona while laughing at me for not removing my masks indoors.

Yes, masks. I am a germaphobe and hence always wear three masks when I step out. Yes, three.

Anyways, my uncle steps in the room and he is coughing. I ask him if he has his sense of smell and taste and unsurprisingly he admits that he had lost his sense of taste a week ago, but it had returned again.

I realised what was wrong. Refusing the tea that was being offered, I urged my uncle to get the entire family tested and ran away. Nowadays I shower after returning home, but that day I added an extra tablespoon of Dettol in my tub and washed my clothes with boiling water.

Sure enough, two days later my uncle calls me stating that he followed my advice and one of my cousin and he tested positive. Fortunately, both their pneumoniae were mild and on the decline.

I isolated myself for two weeks - easier because I live alone.

Anyways, the important bit from this entire story is that masks fucking work. I am fairly certain that if I wasn’t wearing any or had removed them inside my uncle’s house, I would have been infected too.

So, everyone willing to get one can be done in six months!

I see you’re already factoring in that people will need two doses.

…and hoping that efficacy is not placebo + 5%.

Guys, it’s really disturbing, but I have to ask. Do you think Corona will go away???

I have this nasty thought that it’s going to stick around. Yes there will be vaccine and some will develop immunity, on the other hand the virus itself will mutate to different type. Some countries have effectively controlled it. But the moment there’s a considerable cross-border traffic the virus will migrate as well.

I don’t want to sound negative and it’s been less than a year since the outbreak. Nevertheless, I just can’t shake-off the bad feeling about it.
