The depth of Liverpool FC's squad for the 2024–2025 season: Are We Ready for the Challenges?

Hello Everyone :hugs:,

I wanted to start a conversation regarding our squad depth and whether we’re really ready for the challenges that lay ahead as the 2024–2025 season approaches. As everyone knows, the previous season was somewhat of a rollercoaster, with a lot of injuries and busy schedules having a significant impact on our play. Do we have the team to manage the extra pressure of competing in the domestic cups, the Champions League, and the Premier League? \

I’d like your opinion on the following points:

Strengthening the Midfield: Over the summer, there have been a few significant midfield arrivals and departures. Do you believe the problems from previous season have been sufficiently resolved, or do we need require additional support? Will newly signed players require some time to adjust or are they prepared to start playing right away?

Defensive Stability: We’ve had injury issues in the past, but when everyone is well, our defence has been strong. Do we have adequate backup, particularly at centre back, to handle any injuries or suspensions?

Attacking Options: We have one of the strongest front lines in Europe, no doubt about it, but do we have enough depth to rotate well without sacrificing quality? If necessary, can our young talent fill in, or do we need more seasoned backups?

Youth Integration: Klopp has always supported the inclusion of young players in the team. Which young players, in your opinion, have the potential to excel this season and are they prepared to contribute to the greatest extent?

Thank you  in advance.

The mentions of “significant midfield departures and arrivals” and Klopp are a little confusing…

And why the link to a two-year-old match thread?

Midfield: we have two players for each position.

Defence: ditto.

Attack: ditto.

Barring unusual injuries, we have the squad to challenge on all fronts.

Youth: I’ll leave that one to @Sweeting

At least two senior midfielders short of what we need to challenge, 6 midfielders is not enough, Jones is injury prone also.

6 midfielders would be fine if we knew some of them didn’t spend more time off the pitch.

Question is how different will Slot’s methods lead to injuries or not.

I have a feeling we might see less.

While it’s a complete myth that Jürgen’s tactics involved running around non-stop and consequently led to players burning out prematurely, Arne’s style certainly appears to place slightly reduced physical demands on his playing squad.

The midfield in particular looks less hectic…having more control allows this to happen. Now let’s see if that changes when we play better opposition.

Not this week, then.

I just think the way we play seems to have changed slightly it’s no slight at Klopp. It’s just Slot adapting. There were too many injuries regardless for whatever reason.

My explanation for our high injury rate has been posted many times.

Still think we’re a #6 and a CB short (now we’ve sold Sepp). Gomez is simply not good enough to play there again but I’m also looking forward to seeing someone like Grav grow in this new role, working out well for him so far and I see no reason why that won’t continue. His work rate and defensive game is catching up to his ball playing ability. & then there’s Nyoni who has been very impressive in pre-season and is someone we look to be keeping around to giving him a breakthrough season where he gets 5-10 games.

This is probably us done now for the summer and then we see what happens in Jan.

Konate is a big worry picking up injuries and one game he looks world class and a couple of games later looks more like lovren. DM is also something that we should have sorted, after all we have signed Alisson replacement but not Fabinho’s.

Lovren was terribly inconsistent. Ibou is generally superb - no player is perfect - but his injuries are a real concern.

In terms of lads who have played first team before we will still have Morton, McConnell and Danns it appears, barring last minute moves.

The official website still lists Pitaluga as a first team player for some unknown reason but he’s at best the backup U21 GK. Jaros is clearly 3rd choice.

I don’t think we have any young defenders who could step up this season. I like Carter Pinnington at CB but he’s not ready yet. Ramsay (Wigan), Chambers (Wigan) and Scanlon (Millwall) went on loan.

Since we’ve rejected the move to Leverkusen it seems to imply Morton has a role to play but we’ll know more after today. McConnell had a loan lined up but injury hit at the wrong time so he’s staying. Mabaya is also injured once again.

The only central midfield player I can see getting any playing time apart from them is Trey Nyoni of course.

Forwards we have an exciting talent in Kieran Morrison who I think could get a shot in the cups. Kaide Gordon has been repeatedly linked with a move on loan to Swansea so we’ll see if that goes through today. Ben Doak reportedly off to Hull on loan. Danns, like McConnell, got injured before he went on loan so he will stay.

Trent Kone-Doherty is just working his way back to fitness but he could potentially be one who might get a look at some point.

That depends on how Slot wants to set us up.

If he is ok with a 2-1, then we defenitely have the depth and numbers to handle most problems that arise through the course of a season

I think we are fine in terms of depth and quality, and will challenge for major honours again this season.

Probably does mean more work to be done next summer than would have been the case if there had been more movement this window. But I’m OK with that.

Thing is we are only short if we have 8 injuries constantly.

And then you have to question things.

I think that’s my position too.

Slightly worried about CB, just because Quansah aside, none of them are a stranger to injury. If consistently fit, I think it’s the best four in the league.

Midfield I’m not worried about. There is six players for three positions, and we still have McConnell, Morton and Nyoni to supplement that group. And Gakpo can drop back in if needed.

The forward line looks really good

I think, given the reluctance to make moves this summer, and the way the club is banking cash for fringe players, that the club are recognising that next summer is going to be big, and Slot/Hughes are going to need a warchest. I think we’ve raised about £70m this summer.
