The European Union

Doesn’t Magyar basically need that supermajority to really be able to change stuff? That still looks a bit thin…Still, fucking great so far

A lot of infrastructure things. Thankfully Orban never removed them from Europe.

Looks at Cameron

Looks like Vance had the same effect on Orban as he did on the last Pope.

Here you can see everyone who supported Orban in this election. Thank God it didn’t do any good.

Am I the only one who has a nagging doubt about the new government? It’s leader is a former ally of Orban’s and, presumably shares much of his philosophy. It’s great if Hungary moves closer to the EU and cuts back corruption, but it won’t be a complete break and new start.

No, beyond the euphoria of being “not Orban” I don’t think many people have actually investigated what his policies actually are. They are described on Wikipedia as being “Conservative liberalism” which sounds like a contradiction. Is that socially conservative but economically liberal?

He is meant to be much more pro-European, by which I would hope that he means having a co-operative relationship with neighbouring countries. He also claims to be pro-democratic, which again I would hope means to be respecting the rule of law, human rights and political plurality. Far too often, those claiming to be democratic actually mean a tyranny of the majority.

I’m more concerned about how well Orban took defeat

He’s also against (or at least he was) sending arms to Ukraine or admitting them to the EU. Still , he’s not Orban , and the overwhelming message delivered last night is that young Europeans want nothing to do with Russia or Putin.

From very sketchy internet searches they all seem unsavoury characters.
At a guess this Magyar guy didn’t get his part from Orban so betrayed him.
It is ‘fresh’ to hear slightly different discourse and that the USA and Russia don’t like the new guy. So there’s hope.
Seems like a strange country to me.

My thoughts spring to Ukraine too. Will this help them?

I think it would be an improvement if it swings from Far Right to something more centrist, something more practical, something more realistic than swinging to the opposite end

“Magyar promised to put the question of support for Ukraine to a referendum, which, given the strong anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Hungarian society, would effectively halt the process.”

Let’s wait and see what becomes of this strong anti-Ukrainian sentiment in the future. Of course, this is largely the result of years of ingrained prejudice. I think we need to give it some time and simply see what happens when Russian influence diminishes.

However, I fear that this will take a very long time, as we can see from parts of East Germany.

I think it would be a huge step forward if Hungary stopped constantly blocking all aid and if they started using their newly granted two-thirds majority in parliament to clean up their own house and undo much of the anti-democratic damage Orban has caused in 16 years.

We mustn’t delude ourselves into thinking that everything will be alright overnight. Orban had a corrupt machine running, with pro-Russian individuals in all the key positions who first need to be removed and replaced, etc. And yet Putin will still have his spies there. We’ll have to wait and see how things develop. Putting this right will be a mammoth task.

With Magyar you have to remember his coalition of support and the majority is only 5 to push stuff through.

He was never going actively support Ukraine but he will end the blockade on support via the EU. Expect a sort of Meloni figure. (This was what they wanted to paint him as).

It seems he will focus on being a kind of Zelensky leader prior to the war, trying to rid the country of corruption. Expect far more focus on domestic from him.

What he was going to do he hasn’t hidden from view to be honest. Basically they’ve replaced the far right with the centre right. You have to remember Fidez were centre right. Orban has just shaped them into what they are.

The EU have someone they can work with and isn’t drip feeding Russia. One issue maybe the oil they currently export from there mind.
