The European Union

The EU has frozen €20 billions in Hungarian funds due to sanctions for anti-democratic violations, etc., and Hungary will now be very keen to see these funds released. Therefore, Hungary must now deliver something, as it will be urgently dependent on these funds.

I just heard at Magyar’s press conference that the outgoing foreign minister hasn’t disappeared, but has been shredding documents at the ministry since this morning. And apparently, this is happening everywhere at the moment.

One honest question.

Why is Hungary so problematic ?

Regardless of whether it’s orban leading or any other thing.

Indeed, and Orban conceding defeat to him so easily is probably a sign that he and his party can live with the new man in power. Not really great, but at the same time, people have obviously had enough of Orban. I don’t expect a complete u-turn in terms of politics, but it will likely be a more moderate version, one which is more in-line with the values of the EU. And he’ll combat corruption, which is apparently an important issue there. That’s the promise he made to his electors, so I’d be surprised if he pulls out an Orban II policy.

Trump’s and Putin’s main man within the EU is defeated today, and both have egg on their faces. I like that.

No, it’s going to be a bad government, but it’s going to be better than Orban. This is a conservative president with nationalist tendencies elected, but he is more liberal than Orban and has promised to root out the systemic political corruption and no longer be Russia’s Backboy.

But it’s not going to be a “liberal” president. And certainly not social democrat, but more liberal than Orban and without being Russia’s pawn.

It’s an interesting point, I think.

It’s a sign that the electoral result cannot be fudged because it was totally overwhelming. So you have to accept defeat, since there are no authoritarian tools, like military intervention, that would not cause massive civil unrest and unspeakable political consequences.

When it comes to cheating in elections, apart from in banana republics, the cheating cannot help you with 20 % or more vote, because to cheat on such scale you must have a totalitarian system and then you don’t have elections in the first place.

Sadly a social democrat didn’t have a chance in an election in Hungary at the moment. A lot of the attacks would have landed and they didn’t on Magyar.

Ridding Orban was key here, most of us won’t face any issues from a Magyar presidency. Orban was a danger to global order.

Well he wasn’t only a danger, he had the time to do a lot of damage. 16 years in power is way too much for any president or PM in a democracy btw, even a good one. Eight years should be the maximum, as it is in the US. It’s regrettable that Trump got re-elected for a second time after Biden beat him in 2020, but the principle of eight years max is still sound. There could even be made an argument to reduce that to a single term, in order to de-personalize politics and be sure that no-one gains too much power over a longer time.

Having Orban in charge for such a long term shows how damaging it can be for a country, and by extension in this case, for the whole of the UE. Get rid of that.

You really don’t know that Orban was Putin’s Trojan Horse ?

I do know that. I’ll wait and see as to what moves the new guy takes.
