It would be great if he could move the broadcasters back to a public service model. Early days, but it is promising.

The new Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, made his first appearance on state television M1 and made “shocking statements” :
– We will suspend the news department of this channel. This isn’t about me; I’m not seeking revenge. Our people deserve journalism that reflects the truth.
– We will nationalize the assets transferred to entrepreneurs and foundations during the Orbán era.
– 10% of MOL (oil company) and Gedeon Richter (pharmaceutical company) were transferred free of charge to the Orbán-affiliated Mathias Corvinus Collegium foundation. We will reclaim these shares.
– After 16 years of Orbán’s rule, 400,000 Hungarian children live in extreme poverty in this country.
– In my eyes and in the eyes of the people, President Sulyok is no longer the president of this country.
– (When the moderator asked about his meeting with Zelenskyy) I understand your joke, and I like it. But your allusions no longer have any meaning.
– According to you, Germany has collapsed; there’s no internet there, and people don’t even have sex. The Hungarian people laughed at you.
– On this channel, it was said that not even my small children speak to me, even though my children live with me.
– (When the presenter interrupted him) In this studio, no presenter has ever dared to interrupt the most corrupt and lying prime minister in Hungary.
– (When asked about the legal basis for closing the news department) For someone to accuse me of breaking the law here is like a thief accusing the police.
The incoming prime minister also compared MTVA to North Korean state media.
“What has been happening here since 2010 is something that Goebbels or the North Korean leadership would admire — not a single true word being spoken. This cannot continue,” he said.

The hope would be that he brings independent journalists in. It has to be independent from the government, though.
I mean, fair enough, we’re a bit fucked and the internet indeed is a bit shit, but there’s still fucking going on.

Edit, full interview
This is a really informative and interesting interview with the former US ambassador to Hungary (Biden administration).
I know a lot has been said of his politics and his previous positions but you have to remember most dictatorships are only brought down by those on their side or war. Rarely do you rid someone such as this. As I said with Magyar all the attacks couldn’t land as he had been Fidez, a social democrat would have faced a harder prospect. I am comfortable with centre right, centre and centre left governments and I see Magyar as centre right.
Do you are patriotic?
I am patriotic. I do prefer a patriotism to Canadian role model. But i think, that are not realistic here in Germany. Unfortunately.
Hungary’s Péter Magyar spots Viktor Orbán chilling on a balcony at President Tamás Sulyok’s residence:

I follow the national teams and Olympic teams but beyond that I’m not that patriotic my family is heavily Irish from my grandparents backwards so its hard, I do like to see all the home nations do well to be honest.
Who is that?
She works closely with the MCC Brussels (branch of the Hungarian elite educational institution MCC). No wonder she’s crying since Péter Magyar said he’d cut state ties and funding to MCC right after he’s elected.

The story of MCC Brussels.
The pipeline from Hungarian state cash to a right wing think tank sitting in Brussels isn’t accidental, it’s very deliberate. Critics basically call it a dressed up way of moving public wealth into private hands so it can be used for political influence without proper oversight.
First, Orbán’s government changed the rules around 2020. They pushed laws to move huge chunks of state assets into these “public interest foundations.” Sounds harmless, but the trick is once the assets are in there, they’re no longer legally considered public money, so normal transparency and auditing rules don’t really apply anymore.
Then comes the big handover. The main winner was Mathias Corvinus Collegium, which went from a small school to sitting on something like $1.7 billion in assets. Not just cash either, but serious money makers. Stakes in MOL, Gedeon Richter, plus prime real estate.
That’s where the real engine is. Those company shares pay dividends, especially MOL, which pulls in huge profits. So MCC ends up with a steady flow of tens of millions a year without needing funding rounds or donors. It just keeps generating cash on its own.
Next step, control. The leadership was reshaped and Balázs Orbán got put in charge. That basically ties this massive pot of money directly into the political circle around the government.
And then they take it international. MCC sets up shop in Brussels and starts operating like a major think tank. Except it’s not funded the usual way. It’s financed straight from Budapest, with millions flowing in every year. That gives it serious weight to push narratives, host events, and build networks across the European right.
My Dad was Irish, my mother is English, I’ve spent over half my life in Germany and I’m moving to Australia.
So, no, I wouldn’t describe myself as patriotic. I find patriotism a thin veil for nationalism, which is itself a thin veil for racism.
I love many things about Ireland, England, Germany and Australia, but I don’t see any need to take pride in labels.
Do you not lives in Germany anymore?
Only until August. I will be sad to leave, but looking forward to a new life downunder.
Ah okay. Sadly, do you not lives in Germany anymore.
I do want emigrate from Germany and move to the Netherlands, 2028 or 2029. 2029 are the next parliament election (Bundestagswahl) in Germany and i believe, unfortunately AfD comes into the German federal government. The qualitiy of my live would then be poor due racism, xenophobia and ableism. I am of Sri Lankan Tamil descent (my parents moved to Germany during the 1980s) and i have the Aspergers syndrome. The Netherlands have Geert Wilders and him PVV, but this country will never a authoritary country like Russia and now formerly Hungary. The Höcke wing of the AfD want deporting any peoples with a migration background, equalize with or without German citizenship.
