We haven’t got a thread on what goes on in South and Central America. Latin America is a huge continent. It is rich in culture, music, landscape, a plethora of different ethnic groups and complex politics.
I though this lady’s opinion on why the state of many latin American countries are in the state they are in these was very interesting.
After what happened Mexico recently, I was wondering, why there are so many drug cartels in the country and how come the Mexican government can’t get rid of them.
I used to watch alot of US police dramas/ documentaries and how the Cartels operated and how the US anti narcotics agency used infiltrate them, how this how whole drug industry ran, not just US and Latin America but how they were connected in Europe as well as the rest of the world.
Why is it I can’t buy anything, from NYC to El Paso, that doesn’t have trace fentanyl, yet in Europe you can walk down any main drag or a side street with a few bars in any city and you’ll find your man within ten minutes? Might not be premium, but it’s cut with Johnson & Johnson instead of some shit that may or may not kill you instantly.
Who was it told the mules, with authority, we’ll be having none of your fent-laced nonsense on this side of the water? And they just…obeyed?
More generally, I recommend Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America. There’s a lot in that book I don’t see personally, but other parts seem more relevant now than when it was first published.
I hope it gains some traction and proves popular, especially considering the proximity of Latin America to the twisted mechanisms of the US, its current administration in particular.
The reason why i opened this thread, i used see random news on South America, but i didn’t know where to put it, as information didn’t fit in any of the other threads.
It is a thread to go to if people are interested in Latin America in general. Whether it gains interest, I don’t know, but it might do nearer to the World Cup tournament, especially when games are being played in Mexico.
South America have produced lot of great players and I have always wished that we had a decent scouting system to tap into that resource. Granted a lot of them want to play in Spain/Portugal mainly because of the language and foodie culture and probably easier to get a visa to play in Europe for them. But, I think nowadays it maybe a little easier for them to get to play in other leagues in Europe
I misread the title of this thread and was expecting news about South American generals.
However, that put me in mind of one of my favourite ever novels:
The first latin american country i would like to visit is Cuba. I have had a great love for their music, history and joi de vivre despite economic hardship brought by the decades of US embargo.
I did a social school project on events which shook/intrigued the world in the 1960s. A big chunk of it was about the Cuban Revolution:slightly_smiling_face:
