Over the past five weeks, a season that has been delicately placed for weeks has now suddenly lurched downwards to the point where United are staring into the abyss.
While seventh in the Premier League is not catastrophic, if results against Manchester City and Arsenal go to form, they could be firmly in the bottom half of the table by the time they entertain Fulham on 1 February, where the 1958 Group of supporters plan a mass demonstration against the ownership.
The backdrop could hardly be worse for any new manager and does not offer the same immediate uplift opportunity Solskjaer enjoyed when he replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018.
It also means United face a 40-game season, their lowest since before the First World War. Meanwhile Mctominay and Hojlund are in a title race in Serie A with Mctominay scoring a brace away at top of the table Inter tonight.

Lindelof and Sancho are helping Villa go toe to toe with Man City and are comfortably on track to secure Champions League football next season.
Antony continues to lead Betis towards what would be a very good season for them along with his old mate Amrabat.
Alvaro Carreras, who they sold for about £5m 18 months ago is now the starting left back for Real Madrid.
Even Onana isn’t chucking them in like he once was now he’s making twice as much a week in Turkey as he was here.
Meanwhile United are still behind us despite our historically bad run. They’ve sacked their manager, not because of results but because the manager goaded them into it. Their new £70m number 9 is no better than the last big money one they signed and who has since been shipped on. Maguire, who is still arguably one of their two best CBs is out of contract in the summer. So is Casemiro. Shaw, Fernandes, Martinez and Mainoo all up the following year.
You’ve now got a squad built by half a dozen managers and really their only unquestionably successful transfer in the past 5-6, if not longer, is Fernandes.
Oh and the new stadium they want to build now can’t happen as someone else bought up part of the land and there’ll be a public outcry if the owner tries to get taxpayers to cover the cost.
So good luck to whoever comes in. He’ll be their 7th permanent one since Fergie left. For context our seventh manager before Slot was Roy Evans in 1994.

I’ve got to say fair play to United. Not being happy to have a chance at having a better season than us, they’ve gone balls deep on outdoing us on the having a mess and comedy scales.
