This is an interesting sliding doors moment - Lewi claiming he was close to signing for Utd in 2012, but Dortmund were very reluctant to let him go after having lost so many key players already from their two title wins.

In this alternate timeline that means Utd sign a 24 year old peak Lewondowski rather than a 30 year old rapidly rotting RVP setting them up much better for the subsequent seasons. He would have also been on far less money and contributed more for longer. But it also sets up a sequence of events where it allows them protection against the wage increase spiral they quickly fell into. Rooney’s threat to leave in 13 or 14 was an existential threat given their lack of other attacking quality with RVP by that time worthless, but it wouldnt have worked like that with a 25 goal a season Lewi there. Maybe they get out of the Rooney situation without such an explosion of their salary structure and without setting the stage for all the madness that came afterwards.

Or alternately, Lewandowski joins the list of players who looked great at Dortmund, then made a poor move that derailed the trajectory their career was on, the Polish Dembele for example. I think Bayern timed his acquisition about right.
