The Middle East Thread (Part 2)

I think it’s to do with the radicalisation inherent. I have interacted with you enough to know that you don’t subscribe to that. But the harm that the yunus govt has done has to be acknowledged.

Hasina was never close to being an ideal. But the alternate seems to be much more worse

Posted this in the fiIm thread, but it’s very relevant to this thread too, so I put it in here as well:

I went to watch the documentary NAZA yesterday night, from the film-makers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, who also made the acclaiumed movie No Other Land. If this movie happens to be screened in your area, go and watch it. A maximum of people should in fact watch it.

Incredibly well-made interviews of soldiers and members of the Israeli secret services, in relation to Gaza. They tell the story as it has unfolded and still unfolds, and not how the Israeli government would have us believe it. They unfold the technical aspects of the ongoing genocide and how it is done, very precisely and in detail. It’s a chilling lesson about the banality of evil, and the philosopher Hannah Ahrendt, who labelled that term, would be proud of it.

The movie won a big prize at the latest Venice film festival, very deservedly so. People having watched it during the first screening stood up and applauded the film-makers during a record 25 minutes, again deservedly so imo.

As a result of that success, the film-makers are now hiding somewhere outside Israel. Netanyahou and co publicly labelled them traitors to the country after they received the price, and now, their lives (and those of their families and friends in Israel) are in peril.

The film won’t be shown in Israel’s cinemas, but Israelis will still be able to see it on the internet from next month or so.

Here’s the wikipedia link if anyone wants to learn more about it:

The Guardian does a stellar job nowadays. I’m considering supporting them financially, as they are an independent newspaper and don’t rely on money coming from big contributors in the economic circles.

Damn. Such a repressive government. @Iftikhar , what are the reactions in Bangladesh to this ? Surely the Bangladesh government should have tried to intervene.

What a great idea to shorten food aid to people already under siege and half-dead by a systematic lack of shelter, medicaments and proper food. And winter is coming too btw.

Settler violence in the West Bank is at an all-time high, according to UN records. However, it has escalated dramatically during this year’s olive harvest, which is essential to Palestinian livelihoods.

The Israeli human rights group Yesh Din said on Sunday that it had logged 269 incidents of violence directly related to the olive harvest over the previous 20 days.

They included 98 cases of violence and physical assaults against harvesters, as well as crop thefts, and the damaging and burning of olive trees.
