The Middle East Thread

Israeli as in Israelites

If it makes no sense get up to speed lad.

I haven’t seen that. Considering the passion this subject always arouses and the absolute shock some must be feeling , the posters contributing to this conversation have remained remarkably objective. Exploring the rationale behind Hamas’ attack is by no means looking to find a justification for it.

Not sure I could say that was thinking here but this whole conflict to my very limited knowledge has been pushed and nudged by all sorts of interval and external factors. I don’t believe that happens unless there’s interest in maintaining the conflict for whatever reason.

Such a simple fact, but entirely missed by all of the media coverage

As I said above, maintaining Hamas as the main power in Gaza, an entity equally as unwilling to compromise as the Israeli hardliners, has benefit for them as they can then credibly point to the other party and say “you expect to find a compromise solution with that?” and then continue with their ethnonationalist policies

There is an enormous difference though between keeping Hamas in power vs exposing yourself as being the person your biggest critics presented you as. Especially when it was his Mr Security personna that made many people overlook the other detestable parts of him.

Now, it is possible he rides this out or even strengthens his position. But dont confuse the ability to adapt vs his role in creating the situation in the first place.

Are the US preparing to actively participate in operations? There are reports of B-52s landing at Israeli airbases and of contigents of US Special Forces arriving. The 6th Fleet is almost there as well. At first, it looked like the US presence was a show of force and a deterrence but who knows what they’re thinking.

Biden is expected to make an address in a short while.

You missed the point of the question. Whatever is happening now is irrelevant to why the situation was setup in the first place.

I’m sorry but I’m not following you. Could you clarify what you mean ?

That would be just dumb. It will ensure that outside parties are drawn into the conflict. But they do the dumbest things.

I think that is entirely the intention. There is a risk that countries like Iran or Syria may have a pop at Israel whilst they are stretched, particularly if their defence systems are depleted. The presence of a significant US force warns against that.

Biden’s natural instinct is to ward against escalation.

This is five hours old, so who knows what has happened since. I have a friend in Lebanon and she said that there has been fighting since Monday.

Very interesting piece here that could just as easily have gone in the Russia thread.

Palestinians are an inconvenience to countries around the world. No other country wants them despite the war crimes being committed against them by Israel and the injustices met out to them.

At this point, the world should be thinking about relocating the Gaza population , not on muted criticism(Putin) or even overt support (like Biden).

Any other countries besides Jordan/Lebanon (who’ve already absorbed more than their share) willing to take in the refugees ?

And Hamas launching rocket attacks using hospitals as cover etc has been happening for a long time.

I hate the Israeli establishment just as much as them.

He almost certainly will ride this out and strengthen his position. That’s a given.

Electorally, this comes at the best possible time for him.

Almost every party if not every party in Israel is now going full batshit right.

Who’s going to take 2m+ battle scarred, brutalised, malnourished and mentally damaged people with a lack of education and training?

Fair point. Is that the population of Gaza and surrounding areas alone or does that include West Bank ?

The two state theory is officially dead in the water though. Not that this point requires reinforcing. It was only ever a pipedream.

Britain…
