The Middle East Thread

So much of our positioning on Israel is due to it being the only democracy in the middle east…

Not surprised in the least. This is a fascist regime, and that’s what fascists do: suppressing all critical voices.

Some horrifying facts in that article.

He and two other persons have been really brave. One is a former negotiator with the Palestinians and the other is a former IDF general. Sorry, can’t recall their names.

A sad sign of the times we live in, isn’t it? The people in power (the Israeli government, Hamas) have successfully convinced ordinary people to hate each other and that the “other side” is responsible for all their ills, instead of looking at who holds the power.

I’m still dreaming of my locked room solution.

The governments take murderous action and then pretend as if hating each other is the natural state of being of two different ethnicities.

Time for Israel to not be in any European football events.

They aren’t in Europe the continent anyway.

I keep saying this since years. They are not in Europe, why does UEFA let them in? They should play in their geographical area, just like Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia etc.

They shouldn’t play against European national teams, save if they qualify for a world cup, just like all other nations in their vicinity. There is strictly no reason for that.

Nobody wants to play them there, aww, the poor dears…

Yeah. A significant portion of the Asian confederation just refused to play them. Wales’ qualification in 58 came from being given another chance to qualify (finished second in their group) in a play off against Israel because every game of their qualification campaign in Asia was forfeit from teams refusing to play them and FIFA wouldnt allow them into the tournament without having had to play a single game. The confederation then spend a couple of decades going through increasingly silly hoops to organize a qualification system that didnt allow for that sort of nonsense, including intermittently become part of UEFA for one off campaigns, until eventually everyone concluded in the 90s it was easier to just move to UEFA full time.

It’s not right, and by that, I mean it’s not right that some countries don’t want to play them. Force them to play, or otherwise it’s a 3-0 forfeit defeat. Israel belongs in the Asian confederation, and they too should be forced to play within that confederation.

Too much easy-going there. As we have seen, it hasn’t helped installing peace, so enough of it. Force them to play against each other, and maybe they’ll then also learn talking to each other.

The issue with that is it would force them back into The AFC which they were firced to leave when most of the arab and middle east nations refused to acknowledge the state ofisrael meaning fifa were fucjed as too many games would have ended up being cancelled

No one would have expected moving them to UEFA would lead to peace. But it has, until now, at least helped avoid lots of certain flash points.

I have had a problem with that since long, because it generally entertains the idea that Israel is somehow different than others, somehow ‘more European’ than its surrounding nations (whiter? more civilized?). They are situated in Asia, let them play there and force all nations to accept them. Likewise, force Israel to play there, or tell them to stop playing football at all.

In theory, it would be FIFA’s job to enforce this, if they weren’t so utterly useless.
