The Middle East Thread

What you have said is the same handwashing that the international community have been doing for the past year. Their silence is complicity, never mind actually arming the fucking genocide.

As Khan stated the UK have presidency of the security council. Starmer has a lot more influence than most but is too scared to upset those who got him into power and keep him there.

His reply is literally propaganda from the Knesset itself. You can’t talk about the genocide without first highlighting October 7th, and there are no red lines, no human rights, no amount of dead children that can’t be justified because of October 7th.

Your reply has properly shocked and angered me though I understand it probably reflects what others think. Going to step away from the thread rather than get into a row

I’m not opposed to your point, and my question was genuine. What does the UK have in leverage over the government of Israel? If it doesn’t have much leverage, what can it do?

How does that position translate into power and leverage?

Maybe. And perhaps my short reply on what he said was insufficient to emphasise that it completely ignores the very important point that what is going on there can meet the definition of genocide.

But the question is, if you were Starmer, and you had little leverage over Netanyahu and his government, but risk a lot to lose by being tarred as antisemitic, what would you do?

I don’t like it, but it is what it is. We can argue non-stop, but unless there can be a coordinated international effort to make Israel a pariah state (which I doubt is possible) because of the other geopolitical issues going on, there is nothing a responsible government can do, as much of an absolute disgrace to humanity as that is.

Yeah, Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel is not a good sign. He is openly supportive of removing the Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza, and has been for years.

Isn’t he one of the crazy evangelicals?

Depends on your definition. He has called on Israel to annex all of Judea and Samaria while leading Bible tours…

Yeah, notably he was an early adopter of that language in the US. Language is important because it frames the mental models we have of a situation. It is kind of chilling that the point of this is to linguistically eliminate the entire concept of the West Bank because then makes it far easier to do it for real.

Basically, he’s one of those who believes that helping Israel eradicate (and I really do mean eradicate) Palestine will bring about the Second Coming?

Yes, not so sure about ‘bring about’, but that the Jewish people restoring Israel is a precursor. Israel will come under attack by all the nations of the world for 42 months, the Anti-Christ and all that, then Jesus returns to defend Israel. He may even believe we are in Month 13 now.

Referring to them as Judea and Samaria alone is enough of a tell.

Is that serious, or are you just making jokes? Does this guy really believe all of this? :fearful:

Trust me, it’s worse.

In this time, there is no need or way to make jokes. Reality is more absurd and not funny. From the horse’s mouth:

As if things couldn’t get any more surreal , we now have the prospect of Trump , Kushner , Netanyahu and Putin operating in tandem to do whatever the fuck it is that suits them most.

From WAPO , ’ Israel prepares Lebanon cease-fire plan as ‘gift’ to Trump, officials say.’

Thank you. I’m speechless.

While many of Trump’s appointments are astonishing, this one really might be the most startling. I am sure Huckabee will take direction from the White House, but fundamentally he does not believe that Israel should avoid war with its neighbours, because it is pre-destined to be in those wars. He does not believe that Israel should not use nuclear weaponry, because Armageddon cannot be averted.

It’s disastrous because you’re thinking. The key is to not think, then you’ll understand how the appointments work.

But also entirely predictable. This is the wing of the party that pushed for and got the embassy move to Jerusalem. It’s also important to point out this is not fringe stuff. It might be fringe in terms of the population as a whole, but not within the corridors of power on the right.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Would you want the job if you are a GOP insider on a short list for ambassadorial appointments? Only a very limited number of types would want Israel.

Don’t know where else to put this, but did anyone see the France game last night? French supporters largely boycotted the game. Official attendance was listed as 160,000 but I think they used City’s accounting for that as the pictures made it look much lower. The game was then further marred by more hooliganism from sections of the Israeli fans, many of whom attended the game with anti arab messages/symbols on their clothes.

Yes I know, you cannot tar everyone with the same brush, but the population of Israel really is increasingly turning into one that is actually well represented by the Netanyahu government.
