I think it`s just their security calculations myself. Netanyahu isn’t a dictator after all, so doesnt really run the show all by himself.
The thing is, their security calculations doesn’t seem to always take wider sociopolitical and geopolitical considerations into account (or it does, but not, in my opinion, well). It’s all so short term, wider strategic goal should surely be regional detente so the state of Israel can be more safe. But usually, they go with the “Thug Strategy” since they are convinced that “Arabs only understand strenght”.
The Thug Strategy works, but does not contribute to better relations with their neighbours, creates generational hate and irredentist-feelings and thoughts in the minds of their neighbours (and also political segments of the West) and often works counter productive when it comes to how Israel is seen also in the West (i.e. loss of legitimacy). But they have a had a “Bunker Mentality” for decades now really.
Very painful images of the release of Bashar Assad’s prisoners: After years of imprisonment, the first thing you see after release is the grave of your children
This. Events I report about, they only mention 3-4 days later. Sometimes a week, and they explain very little and much too briefly. It is painful, because like Mihnea says, MSM bashing is usually for stupid ideological reasons. But there is a failure to report on massive events of incredible importance, so the normal non-informed man in the street gets the impression that tgis event, that is almost never instant in reality, is something that comes out of the blue. And that is bad, because it feeds and breeds conspiracy theories. It is an actual problem…
That’s just absurd. It feels almost like the entire Israeli elite are in a bubble of their own world.
Having slept on this, I think it’s just baffling how no one with any political power in Israel can see that it’s better to have good relations than poor ones, especially since this is a completely new regime in Syria, where the popular sentiment is just joy at a new beginning for their country. If they could make Syria their client state, then that could give them a rare ally in the region and also at least create a buffer between them and the likes of Iran.
