The Middle East Thread

Meanwhile the Dow is down 700 points and oil has shot up 8%. His hand-waving doesn’t distract from the basic facts - Iran may be a threat, but overall that regime has been fairly measured in recent years. Very few countries would say that about either Israel or the US these days.

I am at a loss to think of any successful effort at regime change that has been done with air strikes. That sort of video-game folly is normally the exclusive province of the Americans, and it has rarely accomplished anything.

There is no appetite in the West for anything like that. The only US ally that would even remotely consider it might be the UK, and I don’t have any sense that the Labour government wants to go out on that kind of limb.

That they have not been able to mount serious resistance yet should be alarming for Iran.

On a separate note, apparently the Gulf countries knew about the attack (through USA), and didn’t try to deter Israel or warn Iran. Do they really expect Iran to capitulate? Hamas is still standing after nearly two years of far more devastating strikes. And if Iran does not capitulate, do they understand the consequences?

Interesting Israeli reports.

They’ve been decimated. Not so notable anymore.

I do think that Israelis have had noticable support on Iranian Soil. Some of what they’re pulling up going by magnus and other reports would be nigh on impossible were it not for the support on ground.

Iran reported to be launching now but many of their ballistic missiles are detonating on launchers instead of taking off.

Some rumours of an Israeli jet having been downed, but rumours.

They have struck a lot of facilities, but I doubt there’s any considerable damage. The main gain must be the decapitation of the military leadership.

Doubt that. Iranian Airforce and air-defence system isn’t capable of downing even the F16s. They probably downed some drones which is still significant.
