“coming from you in particular is very meaningful!”
Is that irony?

Maybe they’ll be joint winners.

Hospitals say. Medics warm. critics say.

The responsibility journalists have respected for generations to couch their reporting in the context of what is verifiable…what makes reporting on what people say more common rather than what demonstrably is…is respectable but in the end opens the, up to be played by bad actors like the IDF who can just say “nuh ha” and now they are required to report a he said she said…”it’s an unclear situation with arguments on all sides that are equally valid”

Was fucking intentional.

The UN rapporteur hit with sanctions by the US last week has vowed not to be silenced as she hailed a 30-nation conference aimed at ending Israel’s occupation of Palestine as “the most significant political development in the past 20 months".

Edit: I duly take note that most of Western countries aren’t present at this meeting, with the exception of Ireland, Portugal and Spain. Well done to them, and shame on all others.

Every pro-Jewish organization in the world: Conflating Jewishness and Israel is an anti semitic trope that positions Jews as having dual loyalty.

The IHRA: Criticizing Israel is a criticism of Jews and so is antisemitic

For anyone who hasn’t read the definition I suggest it’s worth a few minutes of your time. Can’t remember the exact details (I read it years ago when they were using it as a stick to beat Corbyn), but I do remember it is Catch 22 levels of blaggy bullshit.

Something along the lines of “if I don’t accept this definition then I’m racist, but if I do then I’m racist if I criticise them”.

The first time I read them I felt like I was going insane. I just kept thinking that there was no way the thing it clearly said was what they were trying to say and I must have misunderstood.

I’d almost forgotten about it , but am reminded now of the extraordinary lengths that Israel went to to get the definition adopted by different organisations and countries. i.e. a combination of arm twisting , coercion , threats and blackmail … much like the tactics they use when they are whipping votes at the UN.

In essence, I don’t think anyone has any problem with the original text, which was:

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

This doesn’t mention Israel, but there have been attempts to expand this.

For example, the German government added the following:

“Furthermore, the state of Israel, being perceived as a Jewish collective, may be the target of such attacks.”

That really seems to be a get out of gaol card for some to blindly hide behind.

The working definition that the Met uses is here:

One of the things that is constantly stood on it’s head is, “Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.” In practice, this gets interpreted as, Holding the Israeli government accountable for their individual actions will be perceived as an attack on all Jewish people.

I was listening to Alexei Sayle talking about this a few weeks ago, and he pointed out that many Orthodox Jews in Britain (his mother’s family are) would be condemned as antisemitic as they are not Zionist (in the original sense of the word).
