The Middle East Thread

ah Naftali Bennet , the man whose rabble rousing and racism of the last twenty years , and whose avowed determination ( along with Bibi ) to never even countenance the prospect of a state for the Palestinians has brought us to precisely this point , is now screaming about Nazis. I wonder if he got that from Putin when he was cuddling up to him in Moscow and refusing to send military aid to Ukraine ?

Earlier in the thread I posted a long interview with former PM Ehud Barak. Early in it he affirms that (contrary to what the likes of Bibi and Bennet have been telling us for the last twenty years) there is no existential threat to Israel , and that he still holds out the hope of a negotiated settlement and a two state solution but , pointedly , says that might be in another fifty years’ time.

Still , it’s proof that there are still rational voices in Israel , who admit the truth of the present situation and offer up solutions. The fact that people like Barak have been marginalised , and indeed the Left completely crushed , since the reign of Bibi began , and now in their place in coalition government , you have instead religious ultranationalist firebreathers is another part of Israel’s modern tragedy

They need to be neutralised, it’s that plain and simple. The problem is Sunak has ties with Israel through his family business Infosys as it’s directed by ex israeli military so his support for them is gonna be stronger than ever.

Infosys’s ties with Israel isn’t the matter of concern.

They might have some businesses setup there as a result have some Israeli tech guys onboard. But nothing that is a large volume.

Not surprising on either counts. Racism is prevalent in Israel which is why Bibi and right-wing/extremists parties have done well in last couple of decades. Western media, like the leadership, not just tolerates, but overtly or covertly supports such attitude.

If Lebanon joins in, or Hezbollah, and either/both attack Israel, will the US attack them, from the carrier group?

I’m trying to work out what America will actually do. Presumably they won’t want troops on the ground. But firing rockets or bombs, into a civilian dense zone, is fraught with danger, and risks much further escalation.

Is America’s presence mostly symbolic, a show of strength and support? Or do people think that America really will engage, and risk a much bigger war with Iran?

Well, if China says that you have crossed the line, then you certainly have crossed the line. But, everyone already knows that, right!

More likely, they think they can set this up as them against “the evil West”.

My reading is that the carrier fleet is specifically to deter Iran from becoming involved.

“See , America is backing Israel who’s doing a genocide…”

Will be the classic spin on this by the Chinese and the Russians

And they wouldn’t even be wrong.

Fuck all of them. What ever happened to non-interference.

Both the groups don’t have any moral high ground anymore. Not that they had any to begin with.

US and the allies can’t take the moral high ground anymore over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine if they send 2 aircraft carriers as a deterrent and support Israel to pound a city with 2m residents into the ground.

I don’t get why US should get involved. Israel is vastly superior than all the potential belligerents combined. Their south and south-western border with Egypt and eastern border with Jordan is secure. There’s only the short stretch of northern and north-eastern border with Lebanon and Syria that’s under risk. On the other hand, US involvement will ensure an escalation which everyone is, seemingly, trying to avoid.

Meanwhile China and Russia sit round drinking cocktails and eating popcorn watching this unfold. Iran vs the USA would be grim.

If Iran attacks , US & Israel will use that opportunity as an excuse to kill their nuclear program.

They would have done that already if it was possible. US and Israel has killed the then chief of IRGC and the head of their nuclear program. Not to mention several clandestine operations in Syria and Iran.

Those are clandestine operations. This will be dropping some of those bunker buster bombs at the facilities.

Iran shouldn’t interfere for their own good. Lick your wounds and lay low. Any attempt to do so would be catastrophic to them

I think military action against Iran is not something the US will pursue unless they feel forced into it.

I can tell you that, from the messages we get at ground level, US military command is far more concerned with China.

Hopefully Trump’s idiotic behaviour hasn’t killed all hope of talks between the US and Iran. We previously had good negotiations such as Obama’s nuclear deal.

Important to recognize though that Israel has already been bombing Lebanon resulting in the death of at least 1 journalist
