ah Naftali Bennet , the man whose rabble rousing and racism of the last twenty years , and whose avowed determination ( along with Bibi ) to never even countenance the prospect of a state for the Palestinians has brought us to precisely this point , is now screaming about Nazis. I wonder if he got that from Putin when he was cuddling up to him in Moscow and refusing to send military aid to Ukraine ?
Earlier in the thread I posted a long interview with former PM Ehud Barak. Early in it he affirms that (contrary to what the likes of Bibi and Bennet have been telling us for the last twenty years) there is no existential threat to Israel , and that he still holds out the hope of a negotiated settlement and a two state solution but , pointedly , says that might be in another fifty yearsâ time.
Still , itâs proof that there are still rational voices in Israel , who admit the truth of the present situation and offer up solutions. The fact that people like Barak have been marginalised , and indeed the Left completely crushed , since the reign of Bibi began , and now in their place in coalition government , you have instead religious ultranationalist firebreathers is another part of Israelâs modern tragedy
They need to be neutralised, itâs that plain and simple. The problem is Sunak has ties with Israel through his family business Infosys as itâs directed by ex israeli military so his support for them is gonna be stronger than ever.
Not surprising on either counts. Racism is prevalent in Israel which is why Bibi and right-wing/extremists parties have done well in last couple of decades. Western media, like the leadership, not just tolerates, but overtly or covertly supports such attitude.
If Lebanon joins in, or Hezbollah, and either/both attack Israel, will the US attack them, from the carrier group?
Iâm trying to work out what America will actually do. Presumably they wonât want troops on the ground. But firing rockets or bombs, into a civilian dense zone, is fraught with danger, and risks much further escalation.
Is Americaâs presence mostly symbolic, a show of strength and support? Or do people think that America really will engage, and risk a much bigger war with Iran?
Both the groups donât have any moral high ground anymore. Not that they had any to begin with.
US and the allies canât take the moral high ground anymore over Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine if they send 2 aircraft carriers as a deterrent and support Israel to pound a city with 2m residents into the ground.
I donât get why US should get involved. Israel is vastly superior than all the potential belligerents combined. Their south and south-western border with Egypt and eastern border with Jordan is secure. Thereâs only the short stretch of northern and north-eastern border with Lebanon and Syria thatâs under risk. On the other hand, US involvement will ensure an escalation which everyone is, seemingly, trying to avoid.
They would have done that already if it was possible. US and Israel has killed the then chief of IRGC and the head of their nuclear program. Not to mention several clandestine operations in Syria and Iran.
I think military action against Iran is not something the US will pursue unless they feel forced into it.
I can tell you that, from the messages we get at ground level, US military command is far more concerned with China.
Hopefully Trumpâs idiotic behaviour hasnât killed all hope of talks between the US and Iran. We previously had good negotiations such as Obamaâs nuclear deal.
