The Middle East Thread

Lebanon won’t join in. The country’s in the absolute dumps. Hezbollah might

An Iranian attack on Israel would be that catalyst.

Anyone watched this? Care to comment?

Also feels pretty far away from that point though. They back groups like Hezbollah, which avoids direct conflict.

The Lebanese military have been dismantling rocket launching sites in the South today.

What’s TLDR/W gist ?

I don’t see myself watching 25 min videos.

Watch it when you’ll be able to. It’s interesting from an Israeli pov.

Just top of my head

  1. Flatly denies any ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians since 1948.

  2. Frequently refers to religious and historical (middle-age) events which has no bearing to the present (last seven decades) crisis. I have no knowledge about those two aspects and can’t say if they are true or not. But it’s eerily similar to the religious ramblings put forward for the creation of Israel.

  3. Frequently tries to rope in the Christians into the debate. Kept mentioning that Palestine is home to some of the holy sites of Christianity and the Christians aren’t bothered that they those places are conquered and occupied by the Muslims since seventh century.

  4. Very sadistic view on UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Repeatedly says that the Palestinians are getting privileged treatment from UN with their own agency besides UNHCR. Totally forgets to mention the magnitude of Palestinian refugee crisis since 1948 requires a specialized agency.

  5. Spreading disinformation by showing the falling numbers of Jews populations in Arab countries and tries to pass it as ethnic cleansing of Jews in those countries. Totally avoids to mention that the point of Israel was to be a homeland for Jews and the Jews from the Arab countries simply migrated to the new state.*

  6. Accuses the Palestinian groups and the UN/Donor agencies using the fund not to build social infrastructure but to buy arms. UN and Western donor agencies don’t generally give funds to the Palestinian groups, they employ vendors and supervise the construction of the projects. If the Palestinian groups were using the money for arms, where did the hospitals an schools Israel now destroying came from?

I haven’t watched it yet but I clicked straight into the comments to see post after post saying “I am a Muslim but…” and it seemed to me like those comments were probably bots. Makes me highly suspicious.

On this.

Jews did leave the Arab countries en masse following the creation of Israel. But not all did so willingly. In a lot of cases , Jews were expelled / coerced to leave as well from the Arab countries.

The resulting brain drain for the Arab countries was one big fuckup that the Arab countries could do as the Jews in Arab countries constituted quite a sizable portion of the educated community.

Have not watched it either. And yes , I did have a glance at those comments and quite possibly they are bots.

Again , it’s not as straightforward as that. There is certainly some truth to the Israelis allegations.

The problem of UN Aid funds and Aid funds in general being misused is nothing new.

A lot of metal pipes for instance (if bought under Aid packages) are required for construction purposes of pipelines. These are often retrofitted in significant quantities to make those makeshift cheap qassam rockets.

Doesn’t mean Hamas is using all the Aid funds for Terrorist attacks , but a not insignificant amount is being misused.

I don’t buy the fact that Muslims need to regard Jerusalem as one of their holy sites.

I’m an atheist but if anyone has a bigger claim to Jerusalem , it has to be the Jews. History supports that.

I think Muslims have enough mosques / sites etc to be stuck on trying to claim a holy site that the other religion / race has a greater claim on.

huge fan, I have the entire No Res series downloaded

Agree. There were forced expulsions, but there were voluntary migration too. During the 70s and 80s, Israel had official program to repatriate Jews from Ethiopia, Morocco, and Egypt. Israel actively encouraged Jews from USSR and East Europe to migrate to Israel in the 90s. Your point stands, what I’m trying to say is that there were always the encouragement to migrate to Israel.

Agree. But the way he is presenting, it seems like all funds are used for destructive purposes and that’s the reason the Palestinian areas are so poor and underdeveloped.

It’s not about if the Muslims revere Al -Aqsa/Jerusalem. He is trying to incite another religious group which has remained out of this mess.

The religious significance isn’t really the basis of the Palestinian claim. It is definitely a thorny issue in how Jerusalem and the shared holy sites get treated in a two state solution, but the basis of the Palestinian claim is simply that they lived there. To lesser degree its because they were promised self-rule by the brits, but the issue far more fundamentally the demographics of the region at the time the Ottomans were kicked out were around 90% “Palestinian”.

There’s a really good piece in the FT today, well worth a read for anyone with a subscription. Here is one of the key points raised:

That approach reflects a realistic understanding of Israeli society. The Jewish state is founded on the premise that antisemitism is global and ineradicable — and that no one will save the Jews except the Jews themselves.

Valid point.

Except that Israel fails to realise that it’s actions now are promoting anti-Semitism.

Zelenskyy. Smh.
