The Middle East Thread

He is informed, he is just lying.

This an absolutely laughable interpretation of the Rome Statute.

The Iranian theocratic regime has done nothing but oppress their own people and support terrorism. Fuck the mullahs, the world would be better off without them.

You cannot reasonably detach the current situation from the past.

It is widely acknowledged that the Israeli government and military have been supporting Hamas. It is also widely acknowledge that the Israeli government is oppressing the Palestinian people by crippling their economy and constantly annexing more and more land via the settlements.

Is it any bloody surprise why the situation has arisen? The threat is completely asymmetrical, and so the response is completely disproportionate. I’d go the other way and say that if it was any other country bar Israel, it would be widely condemned.

It’s almost like Israel gets a special pass just because of the Anglo-European guilt over the Holocaust and their shame over their own historical anti-Semitism.

How dare you hold Israel to the higher moral standard of not breaking international law???

Add Hamas to that, and the Israeli settlers.

My comment wasn’t in support of Iran, but pointing out their war-mongering pales in comparison to US. They haven’t invaded and destroyed entire countries in the last couple of decades for example.

And currently they’re showing restraint while America are sending billions of dollars of military aid to a genocide.

Also worth pointing out that there are many Christians living in Iran and the largest Jewish population in the Middle East outside of Israel

Even if the majority say it is, it would be veto’d by 3 of the 5. It would have to escalate significantly for this to change (indiscriminately bombing entire Gaza, and before someone says they are already doing that, please try find some middle ground in your assertions).

They’ve killed over 5000 people (half of them children) in 2 weeks, through indiscriminate bombing.

I think everyone in this thread is well aware of your one sided stance.

Geez. This thread is basically a bunch of people shouting at walls.

Absolutely no-one is going to be convinced to change their opinions on this.

Those that think Israel is conducting in a proportionate response are firmly entrenched in that view.

Those that think Israel have gone beyond a proportionate response are firmly entrenched in that view as well.

Absolutely no-one has cheered the Hamas attack. I am unclear but I don’t think anyone has called the IDF terrorists or anything of that sort.

I would have said I would have loved this thread to become a news-only thread like we have for transfers, as it’s only going to get uglier in here, but what is ‘news’ in here anyway? Pretty much every article, video etc is coloured by which ‘team’ (well done Biden ) you support. I haven’t seen too many supposed experts speaking to the media without coming with a serious ulterior motive.

I meant a hypothetical situation where any country if faced with a terrorist attack of this magnitude and brutality , if the country had superior force of arms , would do the exact same thing.

It’s on what other countries would do if they faced this particular situation.

The actions of Israel which led to the shitshow being what it is aren’t in the equation.

Biden pretty much pointed this out regarding 9/11. He also hinted that their subsequent actions were less than prudent.

If more people saw Palestinians as equal human beings, the same as the Jews, the kids who are being murdered in their 100s the same as ours… then I think there would be less intellectual and semantic debate, and more compassion.

We have been conditioned by the media and Holywood to see an Arab with a keffiyeh as a terrorist/bad guy, and the superpowers destroying other countries as the defenders of freedom and democracy

These brittle as fuck Zionist fuckwits need to understand that not every pronouncement of the barbaric acts of Israeli needs to reference earlier Hamas actions. What Israel is doing, and must stop, cannot be justified by what went before and thus it is not necessary for everyone who is calling for them to cease the genocide to also talk about actions of others. Israel must own their behaviour and Zionists must understand that if they don’t realise how disgusting their position is they will start to be hated.

Apparently you have to take sides. Seeing that there are Palestinian refugees that have spent decades in exile with their human rights systematically abused makes you an unrepentant antisemite. Appreciating that there are many ordinary Israelis that live in fear of where the next random rocket explosion is coming from makes you a Zionist oppressor. There is no middle ground.

I lived for long enough in communities where that kind of sectarian thinking was a daily reality to know that the only path is not to play that game. Unfortunately, the rest of the world needs to make that realisation before there is even a hope of moving forward.
