The Middle East Thread

The headline here seems to suggest that the US are all in on the land invasion. But with the latest pause now suspending the ‘imminent’ onslaught back into its third week , and noises from the White House urging caution , might this US General actually have been put there to try and persuade the Israelis of the folly of an all out assault ? Some good analysis here of just what they might expect to face if they do go through with it.

They’ll have to level the place before they get troops in.

So if a land invasion is imminent , expect the bunker Busters in full flow.

Israeli Liverpool fan says he’s ‘done’ with the club

An Israeli Liverpool fan has declared that he is ‘done’ with the club after they banned a tribute to the victims of the Hamas attacks on Israel

Hamas launched an attack on Israel which is believed to have killed 1,400 people on October 7 amid the ongoing conflict between the Middle East nation and Palestine.

In the aftermath of the attack, the FA opted to ban Israel and Palestine flags from England’s matches against Australia and Italy earlier this month due to fears it could lead to incidents between fans inside and around the stadium.

Premier League clubs Liverpool have followed suit, although multiple Palestine flags were spotted at Anfield. A lifelong Reds fan hailing from Israel, Oren Sensel, has been angered by Liverpool’s decision to ban tributes to those killed by the Hamas attacks, and has stated he will no longer support the club.

He has taken drastic action to prove his point, blacking out the club’s crest on his arm tattoo and replacing it with the Star of David, while also crossing out the ‘Never’ from Liverpool’s iconic motto ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

He also had the date of Hamas’ attacks on Israel at the top of the tattoo.

Explaining his decision to turn his back on the Merseyside outfit, Sensel wrote on Facebook alongside pictures of his altered tattoo: 'Anyone who knows me knows how much I loved Liverpool Football Club it was a central part of my life. Everything in my life was conducted according to team games, events.

'I was always there and believed that the statement that Liverpool is much more than football catches even when we were all shocked by the terrible crime that occurred in the Gaza envelope, a crime against humanity where 1400 of our people were slaughtered.

'I was expecting it… It is absolutely clear to me that Liverpool Football Club should not take sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but my big break started with the club not being willing to condemn the crime against humanity committed on 7.10.23 and increased to do when in the game against Everton they did not let a sign fly (totally non political and without any sign of Israel) a sign that perpetuates the 4 fans that were murdered Roy, Neta, Uri and Yuval Hayd, that’s where I finally broke down, that’s when I decided that I’m done with this club!

'I’m not going to lie it’s hard for me, the club symbol was tattooed by my left (the side of the heart) I felt that I couldn’t keep walking around with this tattoo and I did change it because these words are written from the blood of my heart and the blood of my people is not in vain.

'He who does not condemn the crime against humanity committed on 7.10.23 in my opinion is an accomplice, even if the economic considerations are critical.

'So after 45 years or so I continue to go alone because the club that’s password is: “you’ll never walk alone”. He left me to go alone and he doesn’t deserve my sympathy literally.

‘Liverpool, hello and not goodbye.’

Sensel’s emotional post comes after Liverpool sent another message to fans ahead of their 5-1 win against Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday, urging them not to bring flags, banners, clothes or scarves that identified as Pro-Israeli or Pro-Palestinian to the ground ‘for the foreseeable future’.

I think the club’s stance is right, to discourage flags and support either way. The horrible terrorist attack by Hamas, that triggered this latest episode, was far from the first act in all of this. It is better for the club to stay out of it.

Now, with that said, a banner to remember reds who lost their lives, that is neither pro Israel or pro Palestinian, seems to me as though it should have been allowed.

However, it is perhaps too much to expect stewards to sift through the merits of various signs, when the edict has come down from the top to not allow flags, signs or banners in support of either side.

The Palestinian flags that were flown in the image above seem like individual things, and I’m sure if the stewards got to the people, they would have been asked to remove them too.

Maybe he should go and support Beitar Jerusalem instead … and stop trying to slander our club.

Was also his club too. So much so that he tattooed it onto him. Do I agree with him, no. Do I understand his reasoning, yes. I’ve been reflecting my continued presence in these hallowed halls of TAN,

I agree with this.

Stewards are just expected (and probably ordered) to carry the instructions from higher ups.

I feel all games should display just one banner calling for peace. I think the European games had something like this for Ukraine.

The problem with this position is that for much of the world, there have been a string of crimes against humanity since. Should the club now be condemning Israel as well?

I thiink going to the match is about watching football. Not making statements. Liverpool is such a global club it’s a minefield. They’re going to step on one sometime. It’s impossible to please all the people all of the time.

Football is the beautiful game, and it is so because it is enjoyed by every culture around the world regardless of their personal ideals. To bring politics into the game, is to ruin the pure joy that football brings by how it connects people.

inside the stadium, no politics. on the pitch, no politics. those are things for the world outside football.

Sorry pal (not you @1972), but I’ve no respect for anyone bringing their personal agenda into a stadium. ESPECIALLY at Anfield, which is so well respected.

The US is trying to thread a thin line. It’s been reported that Biden personally took briefings from the IDF leadership and has publicly embraced Bibi. Once you do that you kind of own whatever response they make, but they’ve also sent loads of clear signals that they are asking for restraint. We’re now starting to see reporting like this, the appearance of which seems to suggest to me that they’re not get the response from those internal deliberations that they’d hoped for.

fuck. here we go.

Talk of Iran/Iraq ballistic missiles, Hezbolla out of Lebanon also preparing.

This has potential to explode over the next few days.

With Russia so heavily bogged down, there is going to be a significant deterrent effect for situations where Russia might once have balanced considerations (as Armenia has learned to its sorrow).

The scary part of that is that Russia might reach the point where it feels strategic forces enter the calculation - for example in the event of hostilities breaking out involving Iran and the US.
