The Middle East Thread

Yep, that’s similar to what Malcolm Nance was indicating as why Syria is not getting involved (Russia support). Some questions if Hezbollah can be controlled in Lebanon.

Interestingly he described the current invasion/incursion as going to be a slow block by block approach over weeks. He said when we see the Apache helicopters that’s when it’s full scale invasion.

So it’s started.

I can’t fathom how hostages are supposed to survive this

That’s because to Bibi the hostages’ lives are dispensable, only to be concerned about during press conferences when making a point about atrocities perpetrated by Hamas. The red mist is thick.

The hostages are as good as dead.

Even a center- Right indian media outlet is mentioning that Israel is going to lose this war.

Israel never bothered about them. Even after three weeks, there’s no conclusive figure on the number of hostages.

Six of the votes the US garnered were from Pacific islands: Fiji, Tonga, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

They are still to articulate what exactly they hope to get out of this, other than the totally nebulous “destroy hamas”. You cant win a war in which you have no clear and realistic objectives.

I picked up two clear aims from the interviews I have seen: destroy Hamas, and get the hostages back.

I watched an interview with a CNN journalist with someone high up in Israel, and they were quite clear about the two aims. The interviewer was pushing them about the hostage part, and they were adamant that was a key aim, but to be honest it didn’t ring true. I picked up destroy Hamas, and then secondarily, for the sake of decency… oh, and of course free the hostages.

The more indiscriminate the IDF is in its militaristic approach, the more danger the hostages are in. I suspect many of them are already dead.

As for destroying Hamas, I don’t think that will be achieved. Everything that is currently happening will only serve to recruit future Hamas soldiers. And even if the goal is achieved, and somehow Hamas is wiped out, the underlying grievance of the Palestinians is not addressed, so there will simply be another version of Hamas springing up.

Taking things even further, let’s imagine a large scale genocide, and hundreds of thousands are wiped out in Gaza. It will only serve to galvanize the global Palestinian community.

Israel cannot achieve these aims, even with all its militaristic superiority.

Also whatever objectives that they do have are unrealistic.

The world isn’t going to sit back and let them do a genocide.

Just saying , we want to destroy Hamas is unrealistic.

Who exactly is the audience for this message? All telecommunications into and out of Gaza have been cut off for about 24 hours

The message is for a watching world.

The IDF is on the wrong side of the UN and also on the wrong side of what most of the world sees as fair. So the message is a PR thing, designed to look like they are being reasonable in their actions.

Well, yes. It was rhetorical.

But even understanding that dynamic, you cannot play that game anymore. 10 years ago you might have been able to flood the zone with claims that contradict what is happening on the ground, but today you cannot do that. Even with as broken as twitter is the world understands what is happening in Gaza

In the end, I don’t think Israel collectively knows what it wants, what they have now is this inchoate mass of desire for revenge, deterrence, elimination of a threat, and rescuing hostages - much of which is at crosspurposes

It’s dumping billions of dollars worth of ammo on millions of lives which has little other purpose than sending a message.

Cardinal waste of more importantly lives than , Money… For no end result.

Hamas will continue to exist in other names with other new leaders. Nothing Israel does here will root out extremism in its entirety among the populace.

I doubt anyone with a modicum of compassion would support the Hamas attack a few weeks ago.

But it is now a vehicle for grand scale ethnic cleansing. While the west wrings its hands and gently asks for ceasefire.

I really don’t give a fuck about the politics or history of this conflict…but I am certain that history will one day tell us that this is not war.
This is extermination of many, premised on actions of few.

Somewhat lighthearted, but the Israel approach seems much like Chelsea. They are using a expensively assembled arsenal without any clear plan or objective in mind.

A holocaust perpetrated by the jews. They say those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it but to be so wilfully blind to repeating what has been done to your own people only 80 years prior is heartbreaking.

Netanyahu is only pushing for this because he knows his political career is dead once he’s out of this.

His only recourse is to extend the conflict and hope that his tough guy act gets him the votes again.
