The Music Thread

That’s true, no argument but I do question today’s music.

Music in the gym I visit comprises of a lot of old classics overlaid with a drum machine. The rest comprises of the same lyric over and over. Not quite sure how that passes as musical talent but if this generation like it that’s fine, not a problem.

I think today you have to look under the mainstream stuff to find what I’d call real talent, where people are actually writing music. There are exceptions of course.

There’s a lot of garbage now that is promoted as good music though.

not in terms of sheer volume. With autotune and manufactured singers and quite possibly tunes composed by a computer , There’s a lot of human element in music that’s gone right out of the window.

Imperfections as something that gives a song character. Right now, That isn’t there at all.

Why do you think Hard Rock as a genre is dead ? No kid right now has the attention span to look at the finer details of music/ composition etc etc. Why should they ? When the next manufactured pop-star is right around the corner.

Don’t get me wrong , I like quite a lot of 80’s pop and some 90’s pop as well. But the obsession of the music industry to dictate what people should hear / should like is what’s ruined most popular music for me totally.

They do make good music , what do they get paid though ? Peanuts

The music industry has always been like this. They will try to monetize whatever they can. Much of the use of Autotune and composition by laptop is because it is much cheaper than allowing an artist 30 takes to get their vocals just right.

The problem for many artists is that they don’t get that many goes to get it right. Ziggy Stardust was David Bowie’s 5th full album and the preceding 4 didn’t sell at all well. If an artist wants that freedom now they will have to self produce.

Most music since 2000 has been shit especially pop music.
I may look at the 80s/90s with rose tinted glasses but we still listen to 80s and 90s today. I dont see anyone playing Justin Beiber or Harry Styles (to name 2 out of 1000s) in 40 years time.

How Dare You Wtf GIF by Sky

A work colleague is going to see Kiss tomorrow evening on their farewell tour.

Yeah, cant see many of todays acts doing that at 70+ years of age. But isn’t this a reflection of today as a whole? Smash and grab, as everything has such a short lifespan.

Remember going to a tribute show many years ago that had three ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ wannabee lookalikes performing - Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, were both warm-up acts, prior to the main event, and the main man - Elvis…

Buddy Holly was first up - Although I was too young when Buddy Holly himself was alive to compare to this guy… but the songs sounded similar and he got a ten out of ten for effort for putting the energy out there up on the stage…

Roy Orbison was next up, and again was a bit too young to remember anything about this guy in his ‘pomp’, so was a tad difficult to compare apples with apples so to speak. I am sure the original Roy was taller than 4’10" though, and had a voice that didn’t squeak like this guys…

Then the theatre stopped for the intermission. No doubt strategically planned, for building up the tension before the ‘King’ was to grace the stage and complete the full second part of the show, with an array of dozens of songs

With the lights going on it gave me a chance to look around at the audience, not sure there was anyone under the age of 90yrs young. Obviously most of them reliving some of their middle-age crushes… It was also the point that I realised I had made a mistake attending the show, because up to now… it was pretty crap.! Nevermind I thought, I’m here now and the King of singers would be 10metres away belting out some of the songs my mam used to dance around the living room to…

The lights go down again, stage curtains open slowly, massive spotlight shining onto the centre of the stage… drum roll going to build the tension as much as possible - Then this Elvis pretender strides out from stage right shadows into the centre of the light…
Only the guy didn’t really look like Elvis… more like Boycey from Fools and Horses, in fact he looked more like Boycey than Boycey himself… big thick moustache still in place and everything… WTF.!

Yeah he had a glitzy romper suit on, but it must have been missing a button around his midriff, because his humongous gut was pushing itself out onto the stage as well…

Jeeze this guy was crap… So crap I actually questioned myself was it all some sort of wind-up with hidden cameras somewhere… but no, it was real enough. A fact that was confirmed when the guy offered to sign autographs for anyone that stayed back…

Talk about being deluded, I had just witnessed three guys that obviously look at their own reflection everyday, only to see, and more importantly, believed they are the mirrored twin of these past singers!
Ah well, it takes all-sorts eh :0)

Yeah agree with that. As soon as album is released its forgotten as people want something else within 5 minutes

I saw KISS on the farewell tour in 2019!

Long goodbye!!!

With Elvis impersonators, you never know whether you are going to get pre-draft Rock’n’Roll Elvis or late period Hamburger Vegas Elvis. I suppose Only Fools And Horses Elvis was a period I missed.

I actually once saw a Chinese Elvis impersonator. To his credit, his singing was spot on.

Deep Purple are on Sky Arts right now

Peter Kay summing up what we will be like when we are older…

watching TRNSMT featuring Kasabian,

who i normally like but…

not buying Serge as the front man, specially when he is dressed a pink lady from Grease…
