No where near that stage of life. Derby to Sydney is some distance in any event.
We used to go shopping round there for all our exotic herbs.
I noticed that the odds on the Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York being the Christmas No.1 have been slashed following Shane MacGowan’s death. It’s still a few weeks to go so it may have peaked before then.
The Christmas No.1 has a tendency to be either a festive or novelty record but it’s worth having a look at the songs that have been a real downer at the end of the Christmas Top Of The Pops.
Let’s start with this from Queen which covers such subjects as nihilism, murder and fandango. It also managed to be festive No.1 twice:
A few years later Pink Floyd got this tale of schoolboy angst to the top. I thought the imagery of kids getting put through the meat mincer was a nice touch after everyone was sitting around bloated from Christmas dinner:
Then there was this track from the Donnie Darko film. A reworking of an angsty Tears For Fears song turned into something to crawl into the fetal position to:
Finally, there is Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name” which, in fairness, was as a result of a campaign not to have X-Factor at No.1. Well it was either that or having Simon Cowell disembowelled on live TV just after the Queen’s Speech:
Really nice version that. (You don’t hear too many covers of his songs.)
Not familiar with Nick Drake, but I really like that, cheers.
Very influential folk singer in the early 70s… might have been one of the truly greats, but overdosed at the age of 26 in 1974
Looked that up… would have guessed late 70s/early 80s
That track is from his best work , the Bryter Layter album. A good place to start.
Superbe. Connaissez-vous l’histoire derrière la chanson ?
Non! C’est que recentement que j’ai fait connaissance.
Hyphen Hyphen are rubbish but her solo stuff is pretty good.
I love this stuff, so funny, so much like me and my friends back in the day. Except Sleaford Mods sounds good.
All ready posted!
