I know it’s not their newest but it’s such an incredible song!
Love how atmospheric they sound!
I’m going to see them next Sunday. Top band.
Going to see From the Jam in Glasgow in January (for the 4th time).
Support act London Calling, only a tribute act but allegedly the best Clash tribute band
If we weren’t completely opposite in terms of ideologies we follow, they’d be one of my favourite bands. That applies to dozens of bands, I guess.
In what way?
I always like to think music should unify, not divide.
The are extremely anti-religious, their sound, imagery and lyrics are based on “distortion” of Eastern Orthodox Christian liturgies and chants - while I’m an Eastern Orthodox Christian, so that’s where our paths separate.
It’s not new, metal has traditionally been a breeding ground for anti-religious sentiment. There are bands whose lyrics I can tolerate but I’m inclined to draw the line at some point. If lyrics didn’t go against my beliefs, I’d probably be one of the biggest fans of bands like Morbid Angel or Darkthrone.
I mean we both love Nevermore and the late Warren Dane was a staunch atheist and wasn’t exactly shy sharing that in his lyrics. I mean their magnum opus is called This Godless Endeavour.
Yeah but most of the time, he was pretty philosophical about it - specifically in the title track of that album. I wish more people in metal gave such treatment to their world views. He was really one of a kind, I terribly miss him. The break-up of Nevermore and his subsequent death actually drove me away from that kind of music.
I genuinely have no issue with musician who oppose my beliefs (after all, majority of the people close to me are either agnostic or atheist) - what I take exception to is lyrics that openly insult the ideals I believe in (which is pretty much the majority of the death metal founders such as Morbid Angel, Immolation, Incantation, half of Sweden etc.).
Funny thing, though, is that I generally don’t listen to the opposite side as well (aside from Trouble, specifically their early albums, they’re ace). I can’t explain why, it just didn’t grow on me.
As far as death metal founders go I never really got into those guys, I was firmly into Obituary and Death.
I am on the same page as you with Deicide. I like their sound but too anti-religious for me. I mean the clue the name
I listened to a lot of melodic death metal before I learned about Death and Bolt Thrower and that is where my death metal journey truly began. I’ve been trying to fill the void of their disbanding ever since.
I’ve given up on metal bands trying to have meaningful lyrics.
And that includes Iron maiden and the likes who are supposedly having deep lyrics. Well , not when the same themes are regurgitated over a 40+ year career.
There are some songs in some albums by some bands that have good lyrics. But far too little
One of the best metal albums for me of all times is queensyche’s operation mindcrime.
Would like a little bit of what they had when making that album
Can’t say that I don’t understand you. There are bands with awesome lyrics, though. Off the top of my head, Nevermore, Death (we’ll pretend we don’t understand what Chuck was singing on the first two albums ), Type O Negative (a healthy dose of humour is needed), Tribulation, Alice In Chains, Mgla…
Oh and if humour is needed , I’ll put one in for freak kitchen
There are a lot of modern bands with great lyrics. Both Bleed from Within and Thy Art is Murder spring to mind. Enforced as well.
And on queensryche, revolution calling the song is still standing the test of time.
The whole mindcrime album too.
I can’t fanboy that album enough
Going to see them soon, they’re playing their full first album. Would LOVE to see them do the entire Mindcrime album live!
